Chapter 11 - The Doctor's Other Name

Lena placed the medical bag on the counter.
"Mara, I need you to listen before you decide whom to hate."
"That is becoming a crowded decision."
Cole kept the pistol lowered but ready.
Lena explained that she had not been randomly assigned as Mara's doctor. Her real surname was Shaw. Miriam was her aunt and legal guardian after Lena's parents died. She had grown up inside Harborlight's shadow, believing the program saved lives.
Then she discovered that Miriam had altered medical and birth records for Meridian.
"I stayed close to you because I thought Miriam would eventually make a move," Lena said. "The hotline card was meant to connect you to Naomi, but I did not know Naomi had her own arrangement with Miriam."
"Everyone keeps saying they protected me," Mara said. "All I see are people watching."
Lena accepted the accusation.
She opened her bag and removed a portable scanner. "Your baby is under stress. We need to get you somewhere safe."
"There is nowhere safe."
Cole looked through the blinds. "Vehicles are approaching from the north."
Lena checked her phone. "Miriam's people."
They left through a maintenance door and crossed the ferry dock in darkness. A small service boat waited below. Cole piloted while Lena monitored Mara's pulse.
Their destination was Pier Nine.
The harbor had been closed for redevelopment, leaving rusted warehouses and broken cranes along the shoreline. Beneath the pier, Samuel had built a sealed chamber into an old storm tunnel.
The six-number sequence opened the first gate. The word HARBORLIGHT opened the second.
Inside, rows of waterproof cases lined the walls.
Mara expected documents. Instead, she found hundreds of small silver bracelets, each engraved with a number.
"Identity tokens," Lena said. "Every Harborlight child received one at birth."
Mara searched until she found her number.
The bracelet opened a hidden compartment containing a microfilm strip and a letter from Evelyn.
Mara,
The second ledger is not a list stored in one place. It is a chain of testimony divided among the people Meridian tried to erase. Each Harborlight child carries one fragment. Together, they can identify the entire network.
Mara looked around the chamber.
"Hundreds of children."
"Adults now," Cole said. "Most do not know what they are."
A loud metallic sound came from the tunnel entrance.
The outer gate was opening.
Naomi entered first, weapon raised. Daniel followed. Behind them came Miriam Shaw, elegant in a cream coat despite the rain.
Miriam was nearly seventy, with white hair and a face Mara had seen in legal magazines. She looked less like a criminal than a grandmother arriving late to dinner.
"Mara," Miriam said gently. "You have been frightened by people who understand only fragments."
"Did you sell Harborlight identities?"
"I used them to preserve a program that politicians would have destroyed. Compromises were made."
Cole laughed. "Children were traded."
Miriam looked at him with mild disappointment. "And yet you became useful."
Naomi's weapon shifted toward Miriam.
"You said the child would never be touched."
"I said unnecessary harm would be avoided."
Daniel turned toward Naomi. "The recording was real."
Miriam raised one hand.
Agents appeared on the catwalk above them.
"No one needs to die," she said. "Mara will come with me. The archive will be opened. Meridian will be reorganized under responsible control."
Mara held her mother's letter.
"You still think this ledger belongs to you."
She pulled the first bracelet from its case and snapped it around her wrist.
Every light in the chamber turned red.
A recorded voice announced, "PRIMARY WITNESS VERIFIED. RELEASE PROTOCOL INITIATED."

Miriam's calm expression vanished.
"What did you do?" she asked.
