THE MATCH ABOVE THE FUMES

Mara turned slowly.

The man in the green work jacket stood in front of the locked corridor door. He was younger than she had first thought, perhaps thirty-five, with tired eyes and a thin scar across his jaw.

"Do not scream," he said. "I work with Naomi."

"Prove it."

He removed a wallet and opened it just long enough for her to see federal credentials.

Mara did not move. "My mother said not to trust a badge."

The man's expression shifted with something like approval.

"Then she taught you well. My name is Daniel Rook. I was the last analyst assigned to her case."

"She died three years ago."

"I know."

"Were you there?"

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

Mara gripped the envelope. "What is Meridian?"

"A financial clearing network hidden inside legitimate shipping firms, defense contractors, and charities. It moves money for people who cannot be seen paying one another. Judges, executives, intelligence officers, foreign brokers. Your mother traced the transactions."

"And Cole?"

"His real name is Colin Ward. He is a recovery specialist. Meridian sends him when records disappear."

The baby moved hard beneath Mara's ribs.

"He has lived with me for two years."

"He was waiting for you to reveal where Evelyn hid the ledgers."

Daniel approached the locker but kept his hands visible. "What is in the box?"

Mara opened it carefully. Inside lay a stack of numbered bank documents, a small encrypted drive, and a faded blue ribbon tied around a cassette.

Daniel exhaled. "The first ledger."

"The letter says one ledger shows money and the other shows names."

"This is the money. The names are more dangerous."

Mara picked up the cassette recorder. "Why leave a tape?"

"Your mother distrusted digital evidence."

She pressed play.

Static filled the corridor. Then Evelyn's voice emerged, calm and unmistakable.

"Mara, if Naomi brought you here, the situation is worse than I hoped. Meridian has a guardian inside the task force. I do not know his full identity, but I know the sign they use. A black ring divided by silver."

Mara looked at the photograph of Kessler.

Evelyn continued.

"The guardian believes the second ledger is hidden in a place connected to your father. You were told he died before you were born. That was not true."

The tape clicked.

Mara stopped breathing.

"What did she say?" Daniel asked.

The recording resumed.

"Your father is alive. His name is not the name I gave you. If I tell you more on this tape, I may lead them to him. Find the house with the red door. Ask for Samuel."

Then the cassette ended.

Mara stared at the machine.

Her father had never been more than an empty line on a birth certificate and a story Evelyn refused to tell.

Daniel took out his phone. "We need to move."

"Where?"

"Naomi has a safe apartment."

"Cole will know I am gone."

"He may already know."

As if summoned by the words, Mara's phone vibrated inside her purse.

A message from Cole appeared.

I HOPE YOU FOUND WHAT YOU NEEDED.

Beneath it was a photograph of the nursery floorboard pulled open.

The warning photograph was gone.

A second message arrived.

COME HOME, MARA.

OR I WILL START WITH THE DOCTOR.

Mara showed Daniel.

"Lena," she said. "He knows about her."

Daniel reached for the metal box. "Naomi can protect Dr. Ortiz."

"Can she protect everyone?"

"No."

Mara closed the locker.

"Then I go home."

Daniel caught her arm. "That is exactly what he wants."

"He wants the ledger."

"He wants both."

"Then he still needs me alive."

Daniel's face hardened. "Your mother thought the same thing."

Mara stepped closer. "Tell me how she died."

He did not answer.

"Tell me."

"She called me from the harbor," he said quietly. "She said she had identified the guardian. Before she could say the name, her car went off Pier Nine. I was six minutes away."

Mara felt grief open inside her like an old wound made new.

"Then help me make Cole believe I found nothing," she said.

Daniel looked at the documents, then at her.

"What are you planning?"
