Chapter 6 - The Voice Behind the Door

James stepped toward the door.

“Sarah?”

Emily grabbed his arm.

The voice came again.

“James…”

The door remained locked.

James searched his pockets.

He found an old key.

Emily stared.

“You had that?”

“I've had it for twenty years.”

He inserted it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

The room beyond was empty.

Emily looked around.

“No…”

There was a chair.

A small table.

An old lamp.

A bed.

And photographs covering the walls.

But no woman.

James walked inside.

His breathing became uneven.

“She was here.”

Emily found a glass on the table.

Still wet.

“She was here recently.”

James looked toward the hallway.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Who is this?”

No response.

Then a voice whispered.

“You should have opened the door twenty years ago.”

James froze.

The call ended.

Emily stared at him.

“What did they mean?”

James didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the photographs.

One photograph showed Sarah with a newborn baby.

Emily stared.

“Dad…”

James looked.

His face changed.

The baby wore a small hospital bracelet.

The name was visible.

EMILY BENNETT.

Emily stopped breathing.

“No.”

James grabbed the photograph.

“That's impossible.”

“You told me I was born in the city hospital.”

“You were.”

“Then why is my name here?”

James couldn't answer.

Emily took the photograph from him.

On the back was a date.

The same date as her birth.

She looked at her father.

“Who was Sarah to me?”

James stared at his daughter.

Before he could answer, headlights appeared through the basement window.

Someone had arrived.
