Chapter 15 - The Person Standing Behind Them

Nobody entered the house.

Not immediately.

The general ordered everyone to remain outside.

James stood motionless.

Emily watched him.

For the first time in her life, her father looked like a man who had run out of answers.

Ryan approached Emily.

“I need to tell you something.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I wasn't protecting my mother.”

Emily frowned.

“I was protecting you.”

James turned.

Ryan continued.

“The night Sarah disappeared, she gave me something.”

“What?”

“A name.”

“Whose?”

Ryan looked at James.

James's face hardened.

“Don't.”

Ryan ignored him.

“She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to find Emily and keep her away from that person.”

Emily's heart pounded.

“Who?”

Ryan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out an old folded paper.

Emily opened it.

There was one name.

She looked at it.

Then at James.

Her father wouldn't meet her eyes.

“Dad?”

Nothing.

“Dad, who is this?”

James finally looked at her.

His eyes were filled with something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear of what would happen if Emily learned the truth.

The general stepped closer.

“James.”

James didn't respond.

Ryan whispered.

“She deserves to know.”

James shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked between them.

“What happened twenty years ago?”

James's voice was barely audible.

“Everything you believed about your family was built on a lie.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Then tell me the truth.”

James looked toward the dark house.

Before he could speak, a voice came from behind them.

“You really should listen to him.”

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the end of the driveway.

Long blonde hair.

Dark coat.

Sarah's ring.

Emily stopped breathing.

James whispered her name.

“Sarah.”

The woman smiled.

But she didn't come closer.

Instead, she looked directly at Emily.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

Emily took one step forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman didn't answer.

She looked at James.

“You still haven't told her.”

James's face went pale.

“Told her what?”

The woman smiled again.

“That you weren't the one who saved her.”

Silence.

Emily stared at her father.

Then at the woman.

Then at Ryan.

And suddenly the entire night changed.

Because the question was no longer whether Sarah was alive.

The question was who had been protecting Emily all these years.

And why that person had finally decided to come out of hiding.

The woman slowly raised one hand.

In it was a second photograph.

She held it toward Emily.

“Before you decide who to trust,” she said, “look at this.”

Emily stepped forward.

James shouted her name.

“Emily, don't!”

She stopped.

The woman smiled.

“You see?”

Emily looked back at her father.

For twenty years, James had been the person she trusted most.

Now he was the person telling her not to look.

The woman lowered the photograph.

“You'll understand soon.”

Then the headlights of another vehicle appeared behind the family.

Everyone turned.

A black SUV stopped at the curb.

The door opened.

Someone stepped out.

Ryan's face went white.

James reached instinctively for Emily.

The general raised his hand, stopping everyone.

Nobody spoke.

The newcomer remained mostly hidden by the darkness.

Emily could only see the outline.

Then the person slowly walked forward.

Ryan whispered one sentence.

“No…”

Emily looked at him.

“Who is it?”

Ryan didn't answer.

James stared at the approaching figure.

And for the first time that night, the woman calling herself Sarah looked afraid.

She whispered:

“He found us.”

The figure took another step.

Emily tightened her grip on the photograph.

She still hadn't seen the person's face.

But she knew one thing.

Whatever happened next would finally reveal why her family had spent twenty years lying to her.

The figure stopped beneath the porch light.

James stared.

His lips parted.

“Impossible.”

Emily looked at him.

“Dad?”

James didn't answer.

The person reached into the inside of their coat.

Everyone tensed.

But instead of a weapon, they pulled out an old envelope.

The same kind of envelope Sarah had used.

The person held it toward Emily.

“Your mother wanted you to have this.”

Emily stared.

“My mother?”

The stranger nodded.

“Not Sarah.”

Emily's heart stopped.

The woman at the end of the driveway stepped backward.

Ryan looked at James.

The general suddenly whispered something into his radio.

And James finally understood.

The woman standing there was not Sarah.

She was someone who had been using Sarah's identity.

Someone who had been manipulating every message.

Every photograph.

Every warning.

Every disappearance.

The stranger looked directly at Emily.

“Your real mother is alive.”

Emily couldn't speak.

James closed his eyes.

And the stranger added:

“But if you want to find her, you need to know why your father hid her from you.”

Emily looked at James.

He said nothing.

The stranger turned toward the darkness.

“Because the people who took her twenty years ago…”

A pause.

“…are still inside this family.”

The porch light flickered.

The woman vanished into the darkness.

Ryan looked toward Linda's abandoned house.

The general turned to James.

James stared at Emily.

And Emily slowly unfolded the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

She looked at it.

Her face changed.

Because standing beside her mother was a man she had never expected to see.

Her father.

Not James.

Someone else.

Someone who was supposed to have died before Emily was born.

And written across the back of the photograph were seven words:

HE HAS BEEN WATCHING YOU ALL ALONG.

Emily looked up.

The black SUV was already gone.

James stepped toward her.

“Emily…”

She backed away.

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

She looked at the photograph again.

Then toward the road.

Someone had lied to her.

Someone had protected her.

Someone had hunted her.

And someone had just opened a door that could never be closed again.

Emily turned to her father.

“Tell me his name.”

James remained silent.

The general looked away.

Ryan lowered his head.

And somewhere in the distance, a phone began to ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

James's phone remained in his pocket.

Ryan's phone was on the ground.

The general's phone was in his hand.

Emily looked at the woman standing across the street.

Her phone was not ringing either.

The sound continued.

Then Emily realized where it was coming from.

Inside the house.

The house that nobody had entered.

The house where someone had been waiting.

The house where Sarah's voice had come from.

Emily stared at the closed door.

The ringing stopped.

A second later, the door opened by itself.

And from somewhere inside came a voice she had heard only once in her entire life.

A voice from an old recording.

A voice that should have belonged to a dead man.

“Emily…”

She looked at James.

He was crying.

Then the voice said:

“It's time you came home.”

The door remained open.

Nobody moved.

And Emily realized the most frightening part was not that someone knew her name.

It was that James knew exactly who was waiting inside.

He had known all along.

The stranger had been right.

The truth had never been outside the family.

May you like

It had been standing beside Emily for twenty years.

And now, for the first time, it was finally ready to tell her everything.
