Chapter 1 - The Man at the Door

“Dad… why is he here?”
Emily Carter’s voice barely rose above a whisper.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The bedroom door stood open. Beyond it, four uniformed figures occupied the hallway, their presence turning the elegant bedroom into something that felt suddenly much smaller.
Ryan Carter had stopped breathing.
Linda Carter’s hand remained frozen halfway toward the doorway.
Colonel James Bennett, still standing beside his daughter’s bed, slowly turned.
And then the first uniformed man stepped forward.
He was older than the others. His posture was rigid, his expression unreadable, and the insignia on his uniform was not one Emily had expected to see.
James stared at him.
The color drained from his face.
“General…”
The man gave him a long look.
“James.”
Ryan swallowed.
“You know him?”
James did not answer.
Emily looked between them, confused and frightened.
“Dad?”
The general stepped into the room.
His eyes moved from Emily’s bruised arms to her frightened face, then to Ryan.
“You said your daughter was safe.”
James’s jaw tightened.
“I thought she was.”
Ryan suddenly laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous. Everyone needs to calm down. My wife fell. That’s all.”
The general looked at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Ryan straightened.
“This is my house.”
“No,” the general replied quietly. “It is your wife’s home.”
Linda finally found her voice.
“This is private family business. You have no right to interfere.”
The general looked at her.
“Neither did you.”
Silence.
Emily pulled the blanket tighter around herself.
Her father immediately noticed.
He moved closer.
“You're coming with me.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You're not taking her anywhere.”
James turned.
The controlled expression on his face was gone.
“You should think very carefully before you say another word.”
Ryan stared at him.
Then his eyes shifted toward the hallway.
More footsteps approached.
Not four.
Many more.
Emily heard them too.
Her breathing quickened.
“Dad…”
James looked at her.
“What?”
“Why are there so many soldiers?”
James opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, the general spoke.
“They aren't here for your daughter.”
James turned sharply.
“Then why are they here?”
The general looked directly at Ryan.
“To find out who has been protecting him.”
Ryan’s face changed.
Linda’s expression collapsed.
And Emily suddenly understood one thing.
Her father had not come to rescue her because he finally discovered what was happening.
He had come because someone had already warned him.
Someone who knew the truth long before tonight.
May you like
Someone who had been watching.
Someone inside the family.
