Chapter 7 - the woman who stole a dead man’s secrets

Mara Vale had not been a nurse.

Not originally.

Daniel explained that she had worked as a forensic accountant for a federal contractor before disappearing from public records.

Richard Whitmore hired her after becoming convinced someone was poisoning him.

Eleanor stared at Daniel.

"Poisoning him?"

"The official cause was stroke complications."

"That isn’t what you just said."

"I’m telling you what he believed."

"Did you believe him?"

"No."

Daniel looked away.

"At first."

The bank security team searched every floor.

No threat was found.

Daniel insisted they move to a private Whitmore property in Connecticut.

Eleanor refused.

Instead, they went to Samuel’s sister’s house under bank security escort.

For the first time since seeing Owen, Daniel was allowed to sit near him.

He did not touch him.

He did not ask intrusive questions.

He simply watched.

Owen ate two bowls of cereal.

Daniel cried quietly when he thought no one noticed.

Eleanor noticed.

It complicated everything.

Later, while the boys played a video game in the living room, Daniel told Eleanor what happened seven years earlier.

Richard had discovered unauthorized payments moving through Whitmore Biomedical.

The money was connected to a research program called R-17.

Daniel claimed he never knew what the program involved.

His father refused to explain.

Then Richard became ill.

Mara Vale arrived.

Within weeks, Richard changed his estate.

He placed controlling voting shares into a trust tied to Eleanor’s unborn twins.

Daniel was furious.

"I thought he was punishing me."

"Were you stealing from the company?"

"No."

"Did he think you were?"

"Possibly."

"Why?"

"Because someone wanted him to."

Eleanor folded her arms.

"Convenient."

Daniel did not argue.

"He died before proving anything."

"And Mara disappeared."

"Yes."

"Then months later, our son disappeared."

Daniel looked sick.

"Apparently."

Eleanor studied him.

"If you didn’t take Owen, who did?"

"I don’t know."

"Who arranged my delivery team?"

Daniel’s eyes met hers.

"My father."

Eleanor stared at him.

"What?"

"He changed your medical team."

"You told me you did."

"I let you think that."

"Why?"

"Because he said there was a threat."

"What threat?"

"To the twins."

Eleanor stood so abruptly her chair scraped the floor.

"And you never told me?"

"You were pregnant."

"That is not an answer."

"He believed someone might target the babies because of the trust."

"And your solution was secrecy?"

"I thought he was paranoid."

"You always think people are paranoid when they know something you don’t want to discuss."

Daniel winced.

The words landed because they were true.

Samuel entered holding an old laptop.

"I found something."

He placed it on the table.

He had searched archived medical licensing databases for Julian Mercer, the physician named on Owen’s death certificate.

A doctor by that name did exist.

He specialized in neonatal surgery.

But seven years earlier, Julian Mercer was not working in New York.

He was serving a prison sentence in Pennsylvania for insurance fraud.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"So someone used his identity."

Samuel nodded.

"That isn’t all."

He pulled up a corporate registration.

Six months before the twins were born, a private medical staffing company called Meridian Clinical Partners was created in Delaware.

Meridian supplied temporary staff to St. Matthew’s during the week Eleanor delivered.

The company dissolved forty-eight hours later.

"Who owned it?" Eleanor asked.

Samuel turned the screen.

The listed director was Mara Vale.

Daniel stood.

"She arranged the delivery team."

Eleanor’s phone rang.

Mara.

She answered immediately.

"Did you steal my son?"

Silence.

Then Mara said, "Yes."

Eleanor’s grip tightened.

Daniel moved closer.

May you like

Mara continued.

"But I stole him to keep him alive."
