Chapter 13 - the father’s last directive

The revelation changed the shape of the enemy.

Elise had participated in Owen’s attempted transfer.

But she might also have deliberately allowed his escape.

Mara had spent seven years assuming Elise remained part of R-17.

Now she was no longer certain.

Neither was Eleanor.

Hollis Bank notified them that Directive 2 had unlocked.

Not because they had located Subject R-17.

Because the trust system recognized that both twins had been verified alive.

The second directive contained a video from Richard Whitmore.

He looked ill.

Thin.

But lucid.

"If you are seeing this," he began, "then at least two children I tried to protect survived."

Eleanor sat beside Daniel.

Noah and Owen watched from across the room.

Richard continued.

"I made mistakes. Many of them began with ambition."

He admitted investing in Celia Voss’s research thirty years earlier.

At first, the program studied hereditary neurological disease.

It was legal.

Promising.

Then investors wanted results faster.

Voss began collecting genetic information without consent.

Richard discovered the misconduct and withdrew funding.

But by then, the project had grown beyond him.

Private pharmaceutical companies.

Defense contractors.

Political donors.

R-17 became a network.

Richard spent years pretending he no longer cared while secretly collecting evidence.

Then his son Daniel married Eleanor Hayes.

Richard recognized Eleanor’s name from old research files.

He realized two former genetic subjects had unknowingly married.

Daniel and Eleanor.

He immediately feared their children would attract the network.

When he learned Eleanor was carrying twins, he created the trust.

He also contacted Mara Vale.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"Daniel, if you are watching, I owe you an apology."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I let you believe I did not trust you. The truth is, I did not trust myself."

Richard explained that his own financial empire had helped create R-17.

Some Whitmore executives remained involved.

He feared telling Daniel too much would place him in danger.

So he divided the evidence.

The video ended with instructions.

Directive 3 required a phrase.

Three words known only to Elise Bell.

Eleanor stood.

"So we have to find her."

Daniel nodded.

"If she’s alive."

Noah looked at Owen.

"She’s our aunt?"

Eleanor struggled with the word.

"Maybe."

Owen asked, "Is she bad?"

No one answered.

Later that night, Eleanor entered Owen’s room.

He was awake.

"You can’t sleep?"

He shook his head.

"Do I have to live here?"

Eleanor sat beside him.

"You don’t have to do anything tonight."

"Is Mara coming back?"

"I hope so."

"Will she live here too?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"If she wants."

Owen stared at the ceiling.

"She says I call her Mara because she didn’t want me to forget she wasn’t my mom."

Eleanor’s chest hurt.

"She took care of you like a mother."

"Are you mad at her?"

"Sometimes."

"Do you hate her?"

"No."

That answer surprised Eleanor.

It was true.

Mara had stolen years.

But someone else had tried to steal Owen’s life.

Owen turned toward her.

"Do you love me?"

Eleanor swallowed.

"Yes."

"You don’t know me."

"I know."

"Then how?"

She touched his hair.

"I loved you before I knew who you would become."

Owen thought about that.

"Do you love Noah more?"

"No."

"He got you for seven years."

The words were not angry.

That made them harder.

Eleanor took his hand.

"I can’t give those years back."

Owen looked away.

"But I can be here for every year you let me have."

After a moment, he squeezed her hand.

Across the hallway, Daniel stood unseen.

He listened.

Then quietly walked away.

At three in the morning, security alarms activated.

Everyone woke.

A woman stood outside the front gate.

Alone.

No weapon visible.

Long dark hair.

Black coat.

Eleanor watched the surveillance feed.

The woman lifted her face toward the camera.

Eleanor nearly stopped breathing.

It was like looking at herself.

Older.

Colder.

Scarred along the jaw.

The woman spoke into the gate intercom.

"My name is Elise Bell."

May you like

Then she looked directly at the camera.

"And Celia Voss knows Owen is alive."
