Chapter 15 - The Empty Chair at Breakfast

Daniel listened to Isabel’s final recording alone in the kitchen while dawn gathered behind the windows.

“Vivian is dangerous,” Isabel said, “but she answers to someone. I met your father tonight, and he showed me part of the black ledger. The payments began before Vivian returned to the Vale family. Someone selected her, trained her, and helped her replace Victoria. The Mercer Foundation is only one branch.”

There was a pause, followed by the sound of Isabel breathing unsteadily.

“I found the same symbol in my own family records. My father received payments from them when I was a child. I think my marriage to you was watched before we ever met.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

He and Isabel had met by chance at a hotel opening in Lisbon—or so they believed. She was an architect consulting on restoration. He spilled coffee on her sketches. They spent the evening arguing about whether old buildings should be preserved or transformed.

Had even that been arranged?

He pressed play.

“If I do not return, ask Arthur about Project Heirloom. Ask Jonathan why Sophia’s blood was tested before she left the hospital. And never let anyone tell you the black crown belongs to the Mercers. It is older than both our families.”

The recording ended with Isabel whispering three words:

“Trust the child.”

Daniel immediately called Bennett. She arrived with two federal agents and listened to the file. Project Heirloom appeared nowhere in seized foundation databases, but one agent remembered the phrase from a sealed adoption investigation involving falsified birth records and wealthy families.

They searched Sophia’s hospital records from the day she was born.

A blood test had indeed been ordered without Daniel’s or Isabel’s consent. The request came from a research laboratory that no longer existed. The physician authorization carried Dr. Crowe’s electronic signature, but Crowe denied ordering it.

The test results were missing.

At breakfast, Sophia came downstairs wearing mismatched socks and carrying her stuffed rabbit. Eleanor and Victoria were expected to join them under guard, along with Adrian, who had insisted on leaving the rehabilitation center for a family meal.

Daniel tried to make the morning ordinary. He poured orange juice. Sophia arranged blueberries into a smiling face on her pancakes. Marcus checked the windows twice and pretended he had not.

An empty chair waited beside Sophia.

“Who is that for?” Daniel asked.

She looked surprised. “The lady from Mommy’s picture.”

“What lady?”

Sophia ran upstairs and returned with a photograph Daniel had never seen. It showed Isabel standing outside a hospital six years earlier, holding newborn Sophia. Beside her was a tall woman in a white coat. The woman’s face had been scratched away with ink.

On the back, Isabel had written:

DR. HELEN WARD - SHE KNOWS WHY THEY WANTED SOPHIA.

Bennett searched the name. Dr. Helen Ward had specialized in genetics and pediatric medicine. Official records said she died five years earlier in a laboratory explosion.

Sophia pointed to the empty chair. “She came last night.”

Everyone in the kitchen went still.

Marcus checked the security system. No doors had opened. No alarms had triggered.

“What did she say?” Daniel asked carefully.

“She said Mommy sent her. She said when the black crown comes, I should remember the blue room.”

Daniel knelt beside her. “Did she touch you?”

Sophia shook her head. “She gave Bunny a new heart.”

Daniel took the stuffed rabbit. The seam along its chest had been opened and resewn with blue thread.

Inside, they found a small glass vial of blood, a key shaped like a broken crown, and a folded card.

The card contained coordinates and a date two weeks in the future.

Beneath them were the words:

BRING SOPHIA ALONE.

THE WOMAN YOU BURIED IS WAITING.

Daniel’s first thought was Isabel.

Impossible.

He had seen her coffin. He had watched it lowered into the ground. But he had also believed Adrian dead. He had believed Jonathan dead. He had believed Vivian was Victoria and Eleanor a stranger. In his family, graves had never guaranteed truth.

The front doorbell rang.

Marcus drew his weapon and checked the camera.

No one stood outside.

Instead, a black envelope lay on the step.

Daniel opened it with gloved hands. Inside was a photograph taken only minutes earlier through the kitchen window. It showed Daniel kneeling beside Sophia, the stuffed rabbit open between them.

Someone had been watching from the garden.

On the back was the broken-crown symbol and a message:

VIVIAN FAILED.

THE NEXT GUARDIAN WILL NOT.

At that moment, every phone in the house received the same alert.

A live video had begun broadcasting from an unknown location.

The screen showed a woman seated in darkness. Her face remained hidden, but a familiar wedding ring gleamed on her hand.

Daniel recognized it.

He had placed that ring on Isabel’s finger.

The woman leaned toward the camera.

Before she could speak, the broadcast cut to black.

Outside, a car engine started beyond the trees.

Daniel ran to the door, but Sophia caught his hand.

“Daddy,” she whispered, staring at the empty chair, “she’s still here.”
