Chapter 13 - The Second Birthday Party

Vivian sent no ransom demand.

Instead, invitations appeared across the city.

At six that evening, influential donors, politicians, executives, and journalists received digital cards announcing a private celebration at the abandoned Imperial Crown Theater. The invitation showed the seven-tier cake from the Grand Aurelia and one line of text:

VICTORIA MERCER’S TRUE LEGACY WILL BE REVEALED AT MIDNIGHT.

Daniel knew Vivian wanted an audience. Her power had always depended on performance—on appearing generous while controlling what people saw behind closed doors.

The Imperial Crown had once belonged to Vale Holdings. It closed after a fire twenty years earlier and was scheduled for demolition. Beneath the stage ran old service tunnels connected to the river.

Bennett planned a covert rescue. Federal agents would enter through the tunnels while Daniel approached openly.

“You are not going alone,” Adrian said from his hospital bed by video.

“You can barely stand.”

“I lost eleven years because everyone decided what risks I could take.”

Adrian left the hospital against medical advice and arrived wearing a brace beneath his coat. The brothers faced each other in the theater lobby for the first time without guards, doctors, or lies between them.

“I did lock Sophia in the basement room,” Adrian said. “I thought I could hide her from Vivian and return in minutes. Crowe found me. I failed her.”

Daniel wanted to hate him. Instead he saw another person shaped by fear.

“Help me bring her home,” Daniel said. “Then we decide what forgiveness means.”

Inside the theater, hundreds of battery-powered candles illuminated the decaying auditorium. Vivian had arranged mannequins in the seats, each dressed as a guest from the ballroom. Onstage stood another seven-tier cake.

Sophia sat beside it in a gold chair.

She was frightened but unharmed. A small microphone had been fastened to her dress.

Vivian stood behind her in the silver birthday gown, now torn and stained. “Welcome, Daniel.”

Adrian moved toward the side aisle.

Vivian pointed a remote control at the ceiling. “One step closer and the roof charges detonate.”

Daniel stopped.

“What do you want?”

“Consent.”

She displayed the trust terminal. “Sophia will place her hand here and repeat a statement accepting the Crown Preservation Trust. Once the transfer completes, you will sign control to me.”

“She cannot consent.”

“She can perform. Lawyers can argue later.”

Daniel looked at Sophia. “Sweetheart, are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

Vivian gripped her shoulder. “Tell him what happens if he refuses.”

Sophia’s lip trembled. “The theater falls down.”

Daniel studied the stage. Vivian loved mechanisms, hidden doors, and false choices. The roof charges might be real, but she would have built an escape route for herself.

“Why the party?” he asked, buying time.

“Because they adored me,” Vivian said, gesturing to the mannequins. “For decades, this city praised Victoria Mercer. They never cared who wore the name. Identity is simply the story people agree to repeat.”

“You starved a child.”

“I taught her that love does not protect anyone.”

Sophia looked at Daniel. Her fear changed into determination.

“My daddy came,” she said.

Vivian slapped her.

Daniel moved before thinking. The remote rose in Vivian’s hand.

But Sophia seized the top tier of the cake and pushed it backward.

The cake collapsed into Vivian.

Adrian ran onto the stage. Daniel reached Sophia and pulled her behind the gold chair. Vivian triggered the remote.

Nothing happened.

The device was a bluff.

Then a deep explosion sounded beneath the stage.

Vivian smiled through frosting and broken sugar flowers. “That remote was never for the roof.”

The floor split.

Flames burst through the orchestra pit. The old river tunnels began collapsing, cutting off Bennett’s agents.

Adrian tackled Vivian as Daniel lifted Sophia. The stage tilted toward the burning pit.

“Go!” Adrian shouted.

Daniel ran toward the wings. Behind him, Adrian and Vivian struggled near the edge.

Sophia screamed, “Uncle Adrian!”

May you like

Daniel turned just in time to see the floor collapse beneath them.

Both disappeared into smoke.
