Chapter 12 - The House with Three Front Doors

Eleanor’s hospital cameras showed her leaving willingly beside a woman dressed as a nurse. Facial recognition identified the nurse as Margaret Shaw, former director of Rosehaven and a longtime Mercer Foundation trustee.

Margaret owned a country house eighty miles north of the city. The property had three identical front doors, each painted a different color: blue, white, and black.

Sophia recognized it from a photograph recovered in Floor 19.

“That is where Grandma told me stories,” she said.

Daniel crouched beside her. “Which grandma?”

“The kind one. She had hurt hands.”

Victoria.

Sophia had met the real Victoria before the ballroom party. Adrian must have taken her there, perhaps hoping the child’s presence would awaken memories or prove Daniel’s bloodline.

Daniel wanted Sophia far from the investigation, but she refused to let go of his hand.

“Every time grown-ups say I’m safe,” she said, “someone locks a door.”

The words broke him.

He promised she would stay with Dr. Reeves and Marcus at a secure location chosen by Bennett, not by the family. Sophia agreed only after Daniel gave her Isabel’s letter to keep inside her backpack.

Police approached Margaret’s country house before dawn.

The blue door opened into a furnished living room. The white door opened into a mirrored room with no windows. The black door opened onto stairs descending beneath the house.

They found Eleanor in the basement, sitting beside an elderly woman with burn scars on her hands and neck.

Victoria Vale was alive.

She had been moved from Rosehaven hours before the archive fire. Margaret claimed she rescued her from Crowe’s men, but Bennett arrested her until the story could be verified.

Victoria looked at Daniel for a long time.

“You are Eleanor’s eldest,” she said.

“My name is Daniel.”

“I know. I watched you from far away.”

“Why didn’t you come forward?”

“Because every time I tried, someone disappeared.”

Victoria’s testimony was clear despite her age. After the fire, she escaped through the cellar but suffered severe burns. Jonathan found her and arranged private treatment. When Vivian discovered she lived, Jonathan moved her repeatedly. Eventually, Dr. Crowe’s father placed her at St. Dymphna under a false name. Jonathan believed secrecy was protection. Instead, it became another prison.

“Did Jonathan order Eleanor’s confinement?” Daniel asked.

Victoria shook her head. “No. Vivian told him Eleanor died. By the time he learned she lived, Vivian had threatened to kill the boys if he approached her.”

Jonathan’s choices remained unforgivable, but the shape of his cowardice changed. He had not designed every cage. He had merely failed to break them.

Victoria agreed to record legal testimony and complete the trust authentication.

At noon, federal attorneys assembled in a secured courtroom. Victoria and Eleanor provided biometric confirmation. Adrian, still hospitalized, joined by video. Daniel stood as the accepting heir.

The transfer terminal displayed ninety percent.

Then it stopped.

FINAL CONDITION: BENEFICIARY CONSENT REQUIRED.

A name appeared.

SOPHIA ISABEL MERCER.

Vivian had succeeded in binding Sophia to the trust through the stolen accounts. The child’s consent was required to release the assets.

Daniel refused to bring her into the courtroom. “She is six.”

The federal judge explained that no child could legally consent to such a transfer. A guardian ad litem would need to review the structure, potentially delaying control for months.

Vivian needed only hours.

At that moment, Marcus called.

The secure house where Sophia waited had been attacked.

Two officers were unconscious. Dr. Reeves was injured. Sophia was gone.

Daniel heard nothing after the words.

Then Marcus said, “She left something for you.”

On Sophia’s bed was a drawing of the seven-tier cake. Beneath it she had written carefully:
