Chapter 9 - CLARA'S LAST RECORDING)

Vanessa expected security to throw her out.
Instead, Cesare invited her into the conference room.
That frightened her more.
Ethan arrived ten minutes later with two attorneys.
Julian sat beside Margaret.
He did not look at Vanessa.
Vanessa placed the brass key on the table.
"I think we're all being emotional."
Cesare almost smiled.
"You attacked my granddaughter."
"I grabbed her cardigan."
"You helped steal forty-eight million dollars."
"Allegedly."
"You concealed evidence left by Clara."
Vanessa touched the key.
"I brought it back."
"After opening her envelope."
Vanessa said nothing.
Cesare looked at Ethan.
Ethan's attorney spoke.
"My client will not answer questions without formal process."
"Then your client can remain silent."
Cesare turned to Vanessa.
"You said you brought something belonging to Clara."
Vanessa removed a memory card from her bag.
"This was inside the envelope."
Julian looked at her.
"No, it wasn't."
Vanessa smiled.
"You didn't open it."
"No. But Rosa said it felt like one hard object."
Vanessa's expression flickered.
Margaret took the card without touching it directly and placed it into an evidence sleeve.
"We'll inspect it separately."
Vanessa leaned back.
"It's a recording."
Cesare's eyes narrowed.
"Of what?"
"Clara."
Julian went pale.
Vanessa continued.
"She admits she altered financial records."
Ethan turned toward her.
That was not what they had agreed to say.
Cesare noticed.
Margaret asked, "You listened to it?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Last night."
"And yet you waited until now."
"I needed counsel."
Cesare looked at Ethan again.
He looked angry.
Something was wrong.
Margaret took the card to an offline device.
The audio file appeared.
One recording.
Timestamped two days before Clara's death.
Margaret pressed play.
Clara's voice filled the room.
"I know Julian will blame himself."
Julian closed his eyes.
Clara continued.
"He shouldn't."
Vanessa's face changed.
This was not the recording she expected.
Ethan stared at her.
Clara's voice remained calm.
"I altered copies of the authorization records because I needed Vanessa and Ethan to believe they had successfully replaced the originals."
Vanessa stood.
"Turn it off."
Cesare did not move.
Clara continued.
"The real originals are secured in the archive cabinet. The forged versions contain embedded transaction markers. If Ethan submits them, every destination account can be traced."
Ethan's attorney whispered something urgently.
Clara continued.
"I told Vanessa the copies were the only set. She believed me."
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
He looked back in horror.
The forged documents had not hidden the fraud.
They had mapped it.
Clara's voice continued.
"I am afraid now."
The room became silent.
"Yesterday, Ethan told me accidents happen when people interfere with powerful men."
Julian opened his eyes.
Cesare's jaw tightened.
"I recorded him. That file is stored elsewhere."
Ethan stood.
His attorney pulled him back down.
Clara continued.
"If anything happens to me, please protect Elsie from this fight. She should never inherit our fear."
Julian began crying silently.
Then Clara said the sentence that shattered the room.
"And Cesare, if you're hearing this, don't let Julian escape responsibility just because he's your son. He has to learn that love without courage becomes abandonment."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Julian lowered his head.
Cesare stared at the blank screen.
Vanessa whispered, "She manipulated everything."
Margaret looked at her.
"She documented everything."
Ethan's attorney stood.
"We're leaving."
Cesare nodded.
"You should."
Ethan looked surprised.
Cesare continued.
"Investigators are downstairs."
Ethan froze.
Vanessa stood.
"You planned this."
Cesare looked at her.
"No."
He glanced at Clara's memory card.
"She did."
Ethan moved toward the door.
Two investigators entered before he reached it.
One asked him to remain for questions.
His attorney immediately began speaking.
Vanessa backed away.
Nobody touched her.
She looked at Julian.
"Do something."
Julian finally looked at her.
For months, he had reacted whenever she commanded him.
This time, he stayed seated.
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"Julian."
"No."
"You'll go down with us."
"Maybe."
She stared.
Julian wiped his eyes.
"But Elsie won't."
Vanessa understood.
She had lost him.
She turned toward Cesare.
"You think you've won because of a recording?"
Cesare shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the clock.
2:42 p.m.
"The vote is in eighteen minutes."
Vanessa smiled.
"Then you're already too late."
Margaret looked at Cesare.
"What did she do?"
Vanessa picked up her bag.
"You should check how many board proxies your son signed before Clara died."
Julian's face changed.
Cesare turned to him.
"Julian?"
Julian whispered, "Oh God."
May you like
Vanessa walked toward the door.
"The trust vote doesn't belong to you anymore."
