Chapter 3 - VANESSA'S PERFECT EVENING)

By four the next afternoon, the event venue had become a carefully constructed world of polished wealth.
Crystal lights glowed above the reception spaces.
White flowers lined the corridors.
A string quartet rehearsed near the main ballroom.
Donors, board members, socialites, and business executives began arriving early.
Behind the curtains, the backstage areas were crowded with staff, equipment, garment racks, costume trunks, folding chairs, and decorative props prepared for the foundation's anniversary presentation.
Vanessa loved every detail.
She moved through the venue as though it already belonged to her.
Julian followed.
"You said you wouldn't touch Elsie."
"I said I'd handle it."
"Vanessa."
She stopped.
"Do you want tonight destroyed?"
"No."
"Do you want your father asking why Clara hid foundation paperwork?"
"No."
"Do you want reporters photographing your daughter crying while you announce our engagement?"
Julian looked away.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Then trust me."
It was the same phrase she had used countless times.
Trust me.
Julian had trusted her when she reviewed his signatures.
Trusted her when she said Clara had made financial mistakes.
Trusted her when she said Cesare would blame him.
Trusted her when she convinced him that hiding problems was protecting Elsie.
Now the phrase felt poisonous.
But he still did nothing.
At five thirty, Rosa brought Elsie downstairs.
The little girl wore her floral dress and cream cardigan.
Her hair had been clipped neatly to one side.
In her hands was the pink flower.
Vanessa stared at it.
"You brought that?"
Elsie held it tighter.
"It's for Grandpa."
Vanessa smiled.
"Of course."
Rosa did not like the tone.
"Mr. Cesare should arrive within the hour."
"Then perhaps Elsie can wait somewhere quiet."
"She's been invited."
"By whom?"
"Her grandfather."
Vanessa looked at Julian.
Julian said nothing.
That silence decided everything.
Vanessa turned toward a young temporary server nearby.
"Could you bring this child backstage?"
Rosa stepped forward.
"I'm staying with her."
"No. You are needed in the family lounge."
"I was instructed to remain with Miss Elsie."
"By Clara?"
The cruelty of the question stunned Rosa.
Vanessa smiled.
"I'm instructing you now."
Rosa looked at Julian.
"Mr. Lombardi?"
Julian's face looked exhausted.
"Just for a few minutes, Rosa."
Elsie tugged at his sleeve.
"Daddy, can I stay with you?"
Julian looked at his daughter.
Vanessa was watching him.
So was Ethan.
The temporary server was waiting.
Julian gently removed Elsie's fingers from his sleeve.
"Go with Rosa."
Vanessa corrected him.
"Rosa has work."
Elsie's mouth trembled.
Julian turned away.
Vanessa crouched.
Her smile disappeared the moment Julian could no longer see her face.
"Listen carefully."
Elsie stared at her.
"If anyone asks, you do not tell them you're Julian's daughter."
The child frowned.
"But I am."
"Tonight you're not."
Rosa inhaled sharply.
"Ms. Hale."
Vanessa ignored her.
"You stay backstage. You stay quiet. You do not run to your father."
Elsie's eyes filled.
"Why?"
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Because important people are here, and you make things messy."
Elsie looked toward Julian.
He was only ten feet away.
"Daddy?"
He heard.
Rosa knew he heard.
Julian did not turn.
That broke something in Rosa.
She grabbed Elsie's hand.
"Come with me."
Ethan stepped in front of her.
"Not so fast."
Rosa stared at him.
He lowered his voice.
"The envelope."
Rosa went still.
Vanessa's eyes sharpened.
"What envelope?"
Ethan looked at Rosa's apron.
Rosa had transferred Clara's envelope to a small interior pocket sewn into her uniform.
"You don't want trouble," Ethan said.
"No."
"Then give it to me."
Rosa looked around.
Dozens of people were nearby.
But nobody was listening.
She reached into her apron.
Ethan extended his hand.
Rosa pulled out a folded linen napkin.
"You mean this?"
Ethan's expression changed.
Rosa walked away with Elsie.
Behind the curtain, she found a quiet rehearsal corner.
She knelt.
"Stay here."
Elsie grabbed her.
"Don't go."
"I have to find your grandfather."
"What if Vanessa comes?"
Rosa looked at the child.
Then at the pink flower.
She made a decision.
"Give this directly to Grandpa when he arrives."
Elsie nodded.
"Don't give it to anyone else."
"Even Daddy?"
Rosa hesitated.
The answer hurt.
"Even Daddy."
Elsie hugged the flower.
Rosa left.
She reached the main lobby just as Cesare's car pulled up outside.
Relief flooded her.
Then Ethan stepped from behind a column.
He grabbed Rosa's arm and steered her into a service corridor.
"Last chance."
"Take your hand off me."
"Where's the envelope?"
Rosa tried to pull away.
A security coordinator appeared at the far end.
Ethan immediately released her and smiled.
"Everything all right?"
The coordinator nodded and continued walking.
Rosa glared at Ethan.
"You are afraid of a dead woman."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"No."
He leaned closer.
"I'm afraid of stupid people who don't understand when something is over."
Rosa reached into her apron.
Before Ethan could react, she shoved the envelope into a narrow gap behind a decorative wall panel.
Ethan saw the movement.
He pushed her aside.
But when he pulled at the panel, Cesare's voice came from the end of the corridor.
"Is there a problem?"
Ethan froze.
Cesare stood there.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm.
And watching him.
Rosa opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, Vanessa appeared behind Cesare with a brilliant smile.
"Cesare. Finally."
May you like
She kissed his cheek.
Then, with one subtle movement, Ethan stepped directly in front of the hidden envelope.
