Chapter 7 - THE HEIRESS VANESSA NEVER EXPECTED)

Vanessa stood in Ethan's apartment holding Clara's envelope.

Inside had been a small brass key and a handwritten note.

No confession.

No account list.

Just seven sentences.

Cesare knows more than you think.

The September trust restructuring will change control.

Julian will not receive the deciding vote.

Elsie will.

If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.

The key opens the original archive cabinet.

The truth is not in Julian's hands.

Vanessa read it three times.

Then she threw the paper across the room.

"That little girl controls the trust?"

Ethan picked up the note.

"Not yet."

"What does that mean?"

"The restructuring isn't executed until tomorrow."

Vanessa paced.

"Cesare can stop it."

"If he knows."

"He has the flower."

"One piece."

"He has enough."

Ethan looked at the brass key.

"Archive cabinet."

Vanessa turned.

"The foundation office?"

"Probably."

"What's inside?"

"Original authorization records."

Vanessa looked at him.

"If he compares the forged transfers to the originals..."

"We're done."

She stared at the window.

Ethan lowered his voice.

"We have one move."

"What?"

"Get Julian."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Julian is useless."

"Julian is still Cesare's son."

"He admitted everything tonight."

"He admitted weakness. That's different."

Vanessa turned.

Ethan continued.

"Cesare might forgive his son."

"He won't forgive us."

"He doesn't need to."

Ethan held up the key.

"We need Julian to delay the restructuring long enough for the current voting structure to remain active."

"And then?"

"We execute the property sale."

Vanessa stared.

For two years, Ethan had been preparing a transaction that would move valuable Lombardi Foundation development rights into companies connected to him.

If completed before the restructuring, it could bury much of the evidence under layers of legal transfers.

Clara had discovered it.

Now Cesare was hours away from stopping it.

Vanessa smiled slowly.

"Julian still wants his father to love him."

"Exactly."

"So we make him believe saving us is the only way to save himself."

Back at the estate, Julian sat alone in Clara's study.

Cesare had left with Margaret to call an emergency board meeting.

The flash drive was locked in Cesare's private safe.

Julian looked at photographs of Clara.

He remembered their wedding.

Elsie's birth.

Clara laughing barefoot in the kitchen.

Then Vanessa's name appeared on his phone.

He let it ring.

Then again.

Then again.

Finally he answered.

"What?"

Vanessa sounded frightened.

Not angry.

"Julian, Ethan lied to me."

Julian said nothing.

"He handled the transfers. He told me they were legal."

"You knew."

"I knew there were transfers. I didn't know they were forged."

"Stop."

"Please."

He closed his eyes.

Vanessa began crying.

It was convincing.

"You think I wanted this? I loved you."

"No."

"I do."

"You humiliated my daughter."

Silence.

Then Vanessa said something calculated.

"Because I was scared."

Julian looked toward the doorway.

"Of a three-year-old?"

"Of losing you."

"You told people she was the maid's child."

"I was horrible."

"Yes."

"I'm sorry."

Julian almost laughed.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Ethan says your father is going to destroy you too."

Julian froze.

"What?"

"He won't separate your signatures from ours."

"You don't know that."

"Ethan spoke to someone at the foundation."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Julian stood.

Vanessa continued.

"They're calling authorities in the morning."

Julian's breathing changed.

"You need to protect Elsie."

"Don't use her name."

"If you're arrested, who raises her?"

Julian said nothing.

Vanessa had found the wound.

"If Cesare takes custody, you'll lose her forever."

"You made me lose her."

"You can fix it."

"How?"

"Delay tomorrow's restructuring."

Julian laughed softly.

"You really think I'm that stupid?"

"No."

Vanessa's voice became tender.

"I think you're a father."

Julian looked at Clara's photograph.

Vanessa continued.

"If you stop the vote for forty-eight hours, Ethan can separate your signatures from the forged ones. He can prove you didn't know."

"Why should I believe him?"

"Because if he doesn't, we're all finished."

Julian was silent.

Vanessa whispered, "Forty-eight hours."

Then she ended the call.

Julian stood there for a long time.

He wanted to call Cesare.

He wanted to confess everything.

Instead, he went upstairs.

Elsie was sleeping.

Rosa had left the bedside lamp on.

Julian sat beside his daughter.

Her pink flower was no longer there.

Cesare had taken the evidence.

Julian touched Elsie's hair.

She woke slightly.

"Daddy?"

His throat tightened.

"Yeah."

"Are you mad?"

"No."

"Vanessa said I'm bad for your family."

Julian closed his eyes.

"You are my family."

Elsie looked at him for a moment.

Then she turned away.

That tiny movement destroyed him.

Julian stood.

He walked into the hallway.

And for the first time since Clara's death, he made a decision without asking Vanessa what to do.

He called Margaret.

"I need to tell you where Ethan keeps the second set of accounts."
