Chapter 3 - The Second Heartbeat

Silence swallowed the yacht deck.
Clara felt Liam's fingers curl into the fabric of her dress. The guests were no longer pretending not to listen. Investors, politicians, journalists, and old family allies stood in a wide circle around the people at the center of the scandal.
Alexander took one step toward Daniel. "What do you mean, not the only child?"
Daniel set the steel case on a table but did not unlock it. "Clara's first ultrasound recorded two fetal heartbeats."
Clara stared at him. "No."
Dr. Ward closed his eyes.
"Tell her," Daniel said.
The physician's shoulders sagged. "The first scan suggested twins. One heartbeat was difficult to detect and positioned behind the other. I scheduled a second examination, but Mrs. Vale ordered the report altered before you returned."
Clara's face lost color. "I gave birth to one son."
"Yes," Ward said. "At Saint Aurelia Clinic, under the name Claire Hart. Evelyn arranged it. The delivery records show one living male infant."
Evelyn moved beside Clara. "I was there. I held your hand. There was only Liam."
Daniel looked grim. "The evidence in this case suggests another embryo was transferred before Clara's escape."
The words made no sense at first. Then Clara remembered the examination room, the sedative Dr. Ward had tried to administer, the unexplained soreness after a procedure she had been told was merely diagnostic.
"Transferred to whom?" Alexander asked.
Victoria's face answered before anyone spoke.
She turned and ran.
Two security officers blocked the stairway. Victoria stopped so sharply that one heel snapped. She clutched the railing, breathing hard.
Alexander walked toward her with the slow disbelief of a man approaching the ruins of his own life.
"You were pregnant four years ago," he said.
Victoria lifted her chin. "I lost the baby."
Alexander remembered the private hospital stay, the weeks she vanished from work, the official explanation of an ectopic pregnancy. He had sent flowers. Clara had already been gone for more than a year.
"Whose child was it?"
Victoria said nothing.
Daniel opened the steel case.
Inside were medical files, encrypted drives, a stack of photographs, and a small red bracelet printed with the name Baby Crane.
Clara picked up the bracelet with trembling fingers.
A date was printed beneath the name.
Liam's birthday.
"That is impossible," she whispered.
Ward spoke with visible effort. "Beatrice wanted an heir without Clara. Victoria agreed to carry the second embryo. The transfer was experimental and illegal. It was performed before Clara knew she was carrying twins."
Alexander looked at his mother. "You stole our child?"
Beatrice's jaw tightened. "I preserved this family."
The sound Alexander made was not quite a laugh. "Where is the child?"
Victoria's composure shattered. "Ask her."
She pointed at Beatrice.
Beatrice slapped her.
The crack echoed across the deck.
Liam flinched. Clara covered his ears and turned him away.
"Take him below," Evelyn urged.
Clara hesitated, but Liam had already seen too much. She led him toward the cabin stairs. Alexander watched them go, torn between following his son and forcing the truth from the women who had stolen five years.
He chose the truth, and hated himself for choosing anything over Liam even for a minute.
"Where is my other child?" he demanded.
Beatrice looked toward the sea.
Victoria laughed bitterly. "She never told you because she doesn't know. The baby was alive for eleven hours. Then someone removed him from the clinic. Beatrice blamed me. I blamed her. Dr. Ward vanished. And every record disappeared."
Daniel removed a photograph from the case.
It showed a newborn wrapped in a green blanket. A tiny silver tag circled his wrist. Beside the infant stood a nurse whose face had been partially turned from the camera.
Evelyn returned from below just as Daniel placed the image on the table.
She saw the nurse and stopped.
Clara came behind her, having left Liam with the yacht's trusted steward.
"You know her," Clara said.
Evelyn shook her head too quickly.
Daniel enlarged the photograph on a tablet. The nurse wore a gray coat beneath her uniform.
The same gray coat Evelyn had worn at the railway station five years earlier.
Alexander's eyes hardened. "You were there."
Evelyn's mouth trembled.
"I saved Clara," she said.
"Did you save the other baby?"
Evelyn looked at Clara with tears gathering in her eyes.
"I tried."
Clara stepped closer. "Where is he?"
Before Evelyn could answer, an alarm sounded from the yacht's lower deck.
A crew member shouted that Liam was missing.
Alexander requested the original clinic security footage and watched it without sound. Victoria entered the restricted wing twice on the night Noah was born. Beatrice arrived through a service elevator. Dr. Ward signed a false discharge certificate before dawn. The evidence was cold, procedural, and devastating.
Clara refused to watch. She did not need another image of strangers arranging her motherhood around their convenience. Instead, she sat with Noah and asked what foods he liked, which stories he knew, and whether he preferred the window open at night. The answers were small, but each one returned a piece of childhood to him.

Noah later described a lullaby sung by a nurse in the hidden residence. Marianne recognized it as one Clara's mother had written. The Circle had stolen even that, passing family memory to a child while hiding the woman it belonged to.
Alexander ordered his own blood sample sealed by three independent witnesses. For once, he wanted proof no member of his family could alter.
