Chapter 12 - The Ship Named Clara

The Asterion appeared through Arctic fog like a city without lights.

Its hull bore the false name Clara in white letters. Ice clung to its rails. No flag flew above the bridge.

Arthur's support vessel approached under cover of a storm. Clara stood in the operations cabin wearing a thermal suit, watching the ship that carried decades of stolen identities.

Liam and Noah were supposed to remain far south with Evelyn, but Lucien had anticipated the plan. A coded signal activated Noah's locket during the flight, transmitting Northstar's location. The base was attacked minutes after the main team departed.

Evelyn escaped with the boys aboard a small aircraft, but communication was lost.

Clara now carried the terror of not knowing where her sons were while approaching the man who claimed to be her father.

Alexander stayed beside her without offering false reassurance.

They boarded the Asterion through a lower medical port. The corridors smelled clean and recently used. Nursery rooms lined one deck, empty except for rows of numbered cribs. On another deck, they found adults undergoing biometric scans under guard.

These were not prisoners, Lucien later explained through the ship's speakers. They were clients seeking proof of hidden ancestry, stolen inheritance, or erased citizenship.

"Truth has value," his voice said. "I merely created a market."

Clara responded toward the nearest camera. "Children are not currency."

"Idealism is easier when you have never watched a government erase a village."

Marianne led them toward the core. Beatrice walked under guard, but she knew the ship's older passages better than anyone. Arthur watched both women, trapped among former allies and enemies whose loyalties shifted by the hour.

At the central atrium, Lucien waited.

He was elegant, silver-haired, and calm. Nothing about him resembled a monster except the certainty in his eyes.

"Clara," he said. "You survived every cage they built for you."

"Including yours."

He smiled. "You misunderstand. I kept you outside the Circle so you could become incorruptible."

Marianne's disgust was immediate. "You abandoned us."

"I protected the work."

"You always called your ambition work."

Lucien offered Clara access to the archive. He showed her files of thousands of people searching for missing siblings, stolen children, and true family histories. Then he showed records that could collapse governments and corporations if released.

"Help me govern it," he said. "Your sons will inherit a power no army can match."

"My sons will inherit their own names and nothing that requires someone else's suffering."

Lucien's patience thinned. "Then you condemn the archive to destruction."

"Maybe some power should be destroyed."

An alarm sounded.

A small aircraft had landed on the rear deck without clearance.

Security footage showed Evelyn emerging into the storm with Liam and Noah.

Clara's heart stopped.

Behind them walked Victoria, holding a gun.

Victoria contacted the bridge. "I have the keys. I want immunity, money, and a new identity."

Lucien smiled at Clara. "People always reveal their price."

"Not everyone," Clara said.

Alexander was already moving toward the rear deck.

Clara followed.

By the time they arrived, Victoria had the twins near the railing. Wind tore at their clothes. Evelyn lay injured on the ice.

"Stay back," Victoria shouted.

Noah looked at her. "You held me once."

Victoria's grip on the gun trembled.

"I was afraid," she said.

"You still are."

Liam reached for Noah's hand.

The simple gesture broke something in Victoria. She lowered the weapon.

A shot rang out from above.

Victoria fell.

Lucien stood on the upper deck with a pistol.

"Weakness," he said, "is expensive."

Then the ice beneath Noah cracked, and he disappeared into the black sea.

Aboard the Asterion, Clara discovered a nursery prepared with two beds, clothing in Liam's and Noah's sizes, and walls painted with constellations. Lucien had planned their arrival as if kidnapping could be transformed into homecoming through decoration.

Noah touched one painted star and asked who had chosen it. Lucien's voice answered through the speaker that he had. Noah wiped the star with his sleeve until the paint smeared. It was a child's small rebellion, but Clara saw Lucien's smile vanish on the camera feed.

Lucien offered Liam a model ship made of silver. Liam asked whether Noah would receive one too. When Lucien said Noah already possessed something more valuable, Liam dropped the gift on the floor.

The Asterion's nursery clock was set five years behind. Lucien had preserved the hour Noah was taken, as though freezing time could excuse everything done afterward.
