Chapter 13 - Beneath the Ice

Alexander jumped before anyone could stop him.

The water swallowed him and Noah together. Clara reached the broken edge, screaming their names. Arthur and Daniel secured ropes while crew members lowered rescue lights into the sea.

Seconds became unbearable.

Then Alexander surfaced with Noah locked against his chest.

They hauled both onto the deck. Noah was not breathing.

Clara began compressions while Marianne prepared emergency oxygen. Alexander lay nearby, shivering violently, refusing treatment until Noah coughed water and cried.

The sound broke everyone.

Clara pressed her forehead to Noah's and sobbed. Liam wrapped himself around his brother. Alexander turned away, not hiding his tears.

Victoria remained alive. The bullet had passed through her shoulder. Evelyn, bruised but conscious, explained that Victoria had found them after the attack on Northstar. She claimed she wanted to help. Halfway to the Asterion, fear changed her plan.

Clara did not forgive her, but she ordered that Victoria receive medical care.

"Why?" Victoria asked weakly.

"Because my sons are watching."

Lucien sealed the ship and initiated departure toward Russian waters, where he had allies prepared to protect the archive. Arthur's support vessel was disabled. The team was trapped aboard.

Marianne reached the core chamber but discovered the system required simultaneous biometric authorization from both twins. Lucien controlled the chamber access and demanded Clara's cooperation.

Beatrice proposed another plan.

"The ship has a thermal purge system," she said. "It can melt the archive servers and sink the core beneath the sea."

Arthur stared at her. "You spent years trying to own it."

"And now Lucien has it. I prefer ashes to his victory."

Her motive was not redemption, but spite. Yet the plan could work.

Clara refused to sacrifice the identity records without first extracting the index. Marianne believed she could copy enough data to preserve paths for victims while destroying the weaponized files.

They divided into teams.

Arthur and Daniel would seize the engine room. Beatrice would access the purge controls. Marianne, Clara, and the twins would enter the core. Alexander would protect them.

"You are injured," Clara told him.

His lips were blue from the water. "So is everyone."

"That is not an argument."

"No. It is the truth."

She touched his face, the first voluntary touch she had given him since the yacht. It was not forgiveness. It was recognition.

"Do not make our children watch you die."

"I won't."

They reached the core through a medical lift. The chamber was circular, lined with columns of light. At its center stood two hand scanners designed for the twins.

Liam looked frightened. Noah looked exhausted.

Clara knelt between them. "You do not have to be brave because adults failed. You only have to hold my hands."

The boys placed their palms on the scanners while holding Clara's fingers.

The archive opened.

Names flooded the walls.

Millions of them.

Marianne began the extraction.

Lucien entered the chamber with armed guards.

Alexander stepped in front of Clara and the boys.

Lucien aimed at him. "You were never worthy of my daughter."

Alexander did not disagree.

"But I can still be worthy of standing here."

Gunfire erupted.

The lights went dark.

When emergency power returned, Lucien was gone, one guard was dead, and Beatrice's voice came over the speakers.

"The purge has begun. You have nine minutes before the core melts."

Marianne looked at the extraction progress.

Three percent complete.

After Noah was pulled from the sea, Alexander suffered violent shaking and could barely stand. He still tried to follow Clara into the medical room until Liam took his hand and ordered him to sit. Alexander obeyed.

Liam wrapped a thermal blanket around his shoulders the way Alexander had once wrapped his jacket around Clara in an earlier life. The gesture carried no history for the child, only care. For Alexander, it felt like a gift he had not earned and therefore had to honor.

Victoria whispered an apology after surgery. Clara told her apologies were beginnings, not payment. Victoria would still testify, face judgment, and live with Noah's question for the rest of her life.

When Noah finally breathed, Alexander laughed and cried at once. Clara had never heard that sound from him before; it held no pride, only gratitude.
