Emma’s elementary school went into lockdown.
Parents gathered outside police barriers.
News vans arrived.
Claire kept Emma home.
She refused to let her daughter near a window.
Lily’s adoptive parents, Steven and Rachel Morgan, gave police every detail they could remember.
Lily had attended a friend’s birthday party the previous evening.
She returned home.
She went to bed.
At 6:00 a.m., Rachel checked her room.
Empty.
The bedroom window was unlocked.
No broken glass.
No signs of forced entry.
But a small silver box sat on Lily’s pillow.
Exactly like the box Richard had given Emma.
Inside was nothing.
Bennett returned to the Pierce house at noon.
“We need Emma to look at something.”
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“It’s not graphic.”
“She’s nine.”
“I know.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“If Emma recognizes someone, it could help Lily.”
Claire reluctantly agreed.
Bennett showed Emma a series of security images taken around the school.
Emma pointed at one.
“That lady.”
Margaret Hale.
“You know her?”
“She talked to me once.”
Claire crouched.
“When?”
“Before Christmas break.”
“What did she say?”
Emma thought.
“She asked if Lily was my sister.”
Daniel’s blood went cold.
“What did you tell her?”
“I said no.”
“What did she do?”
“She laughed.”
Emma looked confused.
“She said, ‘That’s what they told me too.’”
Bennett exchanged a look with Daniel.
“Anything else?”
“She gave me candy, but Mrs. Brooks told me not to take food from strangers.”
Claire squeezed Emma’s shoulder.
“You did the right thing.”
Emma looked worried.
“Is Lily in trouble?”
Claire did not answer.
That afternoon, police interviewed Margaret.
She denied kidnapping Lily.
She admitted knowing Richard.
She admitted giving birth at St. Anne’s.
And she admitted participating in a plan to switch babies.
But her explanation changed everything again.
Richard had not approached her because he believed her baby belonged to Michael.
Margaret had approached Richard.
She told him Michael was the father because she needed money.
Richard believed her.
At first.
Then, two weeks before the birth, Richard secretly obtained Michael’s old medical records.
He discovered his son had been sterile.
Margaret assumed Richard would abandon the scheme.
He did not.
Instead, he became more determined.
“Why?” Bennett asked her.
Margaret began shaking.
“Because by then it wasn’t about Michael.”
“What was it about?”
Margaret stared toward the interrogation room mirror.
“Richard wanted a child he could own.”
Bennett later repeated the words to Daniel and Claire.
Richard’s first marriage had collapsed.
Michael was dead.
Daniel had moved away emotionally.
Richard felt his family slipping beyond his control.
A granddaughter represented a second chance.
Not love.
Control.
He convinced Dr. Keene to participate in an illegal infant swap, promising him money and threatening to expose an unrelated malpractice case.
But something went wrong during the forty-three-minute system outage.
According to Margaret, Richard wanted Claire’s newborn transferred to Margaret.
He planned to raise Claire’s biological daughter indirectly, believing Daniel and Claire would raise Margaret’s baby without knowing.
Why?
Punishment.
Richard hated Claire because she had encouraged Daniel to distance himself.
He wanted to steal the child from under their noses while still watching her grow.
But Keene panicked.
The identities became confused.
And when the system came back online, nobody knew which bracelet belonged to which bassinet.
Margaret claimed the plan failed.
Or so she believed.
Then Bennett asked the question.
“If the switch failed, why did Richard continue watching the girls?”
