THE LAST CHRISTMAS PRESENT / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - One of Us Is Wrong)

The motel security footage changed the investigation.

Richard had checked into Room 214 on December 22.

Margaret arrived two hours later with Anna.

They stayed three nights.

On Christmas morning, Richard left alone.

Margaret and Anna remained until 4:10 p.m.

Then they disappeared.

Police believed Margaret knew about the cream.

Claire believed more than that.

“She helped him.”

Daniel stared at the television where Bennett had paused the surveillance video.

Margaret was visible carrying a grocery bag.

“She might be afraid of him.”

Claire turned.

“Why do you keep looking for explanations?”

“I’m looking for facts.”

“You’re looking for a version of this where your family isn’t responsible.”

“My family?”

“Your father.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Richard is not my family anymore.”

Claire regretted the words as soon as she heard the pain beneath his.

She touched his arm.

“I’m sorry.”

“No. You’re right.”

He looked toward the paused image of Margaret.

“I spent years telling myself Dad was just difficult.”

Claire said nothing.

“My mother left when I was twelve.”

“You told me.”

“I said she abandoned us.”

“That’s what Richard told you.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“What if that wasn’t true?”

Within hours, Bennett began looking for Daniel’s mother.

Her name was Evelyn Pierce.

Officially, she had moved to Oregon after divorcing Richard twenty-six years earlier.

Daniel had received two birthday cards afterward.

Then nothing.

Richard claimed she wanted a new life.

A database search produced something unexpected.

Evelyn had never lived in Oregon.

Her Social Security number had been used in Colorado, then New Mexico.

She was alive.

And only three months earlier, she had applied for a passport.

Bennett called the number attached to the application.

A woman answered.

When Daniel said his name, she began crying.

“Danny?”

He could not speak.

Claire held his hand.

“Mom?”

Evelyn sobbed.

“Oh God. He finally let you call me.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“Nobody stopped me.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered, “Richard did.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

For twenty-six years, he had believed his mother chose to leave.

Instead, Evelyn told them that Richard had threatened her.

He controlled the money.

He intercepted letters.

He claimed Daniel and Michael hated her.

When she tried to return, Richard obtained a restraining order based on accusations she said were fabricated.

By the time she fought them, Daniel was already an adult and refused contact.

“I thought you hated me.”

Daniel sat on the kitchen floor.

“I thought you left.”

Evelyn cried.

“He was good at making people believe the version he needed.”

Bennett asked the question everyone feared.

“Did Richard ever talk about grandchildren?”

Evelyn went quiet.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He believed Michael should carry the Pierce name.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Michael didn’t even have children.”

Evelyn whispered, “Richard believed he did.”

Claire looked at Bennett.

“Margaret.”

Evelyn continued.

“Michael told me about her once.”

Daniel froze.

“You spoke to Michael after you left?”

“For years.”

Daniel stood.

Richard had lied about that too.

“What did Michael say?”

“That Margaret was obsessed with him. That she claimed she was pregnant. He didn’t believe the baby was his.”

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“Why?”

“Because he had undergone fertility testing after an accident.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“What kind of testing?”

Evelyn answered.

“Michael was sterile.”

The room went silent.

May you like

If Michael could not father a child, then Richard’s entire obsession had been built on a lie.

Unless Richard already knew.
