THE LAST CHRISTMAS PRESENT / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Girl in the Church Basement)

Lily Morgan was found alive inside the basement of an abandoned church twenty miles from Lake Arden.

She was cold.

Dehydrated.

Terrified.

But alive.

Daniel did not see her immediately.

Rachel and Steven Morgan arrived first.

They ran into the hospital together.

Claire watched them from across the corridor.

Daniel stood beside her.

“That’s her family,” Claire said.

Daniel nodded.

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Rachel had packed Lily’s school lunches for nine years.

Steven had taught her to ride a bicycle.

They were her parents.

Biology did not erase them any more than it erased Claire and Daniel from Emma’s life.

Hours later, Rachel agreed to speak with Daniel.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

“She told us a man took her.”

“Richard?”

“She recognized him from school events.”

Daniel nodded.

Richard had attended two.

Rachel crossed her arms.

“She said he told her you were her real father.”

Daniel looked down.

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“Are you?”

He forced himself to answer.

“Yes.”

Rachel flinched.

Daniel continued.

“I found out yesterday.”

She stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you to protect Lily.”

“I’ve been doing that since the day she came home.”

“I know.”

Rachel’s anger cracked.

“She thinks we lied to her.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t fix this.”

“No.”

She wiped her eyes.

“Richard told her that everyone had stolen her.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Did she say where he went?”

“No.”

Then Rachel remembered something.

“He gave her a key.”

Daniel looked up.

“What kind?”

“A brass key. She dropped it when police found her.”

Bennett recovered it.

The key was old.

Hand-cut.

A locksmith identified it as belonging to a safe-deposit system no longer commonly used.

Daniel recognized the stamped letters.

C.P.T.

Claire Pierce Trust.

Claire frowned.

“I don’t have a trust.”

Daniel stared at the key.

“My grandfather did.”

Charles Pierce had been wealthy.

When he died, most of his estate went to Richard.

Or so Daniel had always believed.

Bennett obtained probate records.

There was a hidden provision.

Charles created a separate trust.

The beneficiary was not Richard.

It was any biological granddaughter born to either Michael or Daniel.

The trust contained property, investments, and family shares now worth approximately eighteen million dollars.

Claire understood first.

“That’s why.”

Daniel stared.

Richard had not simply wanted control.

He wanted the money.

But the trust contained an unusual clause.

If more than one qualifying granddaughter existed, ownership divided equally.

Emma qualified.

Lily qualified.

Richard could not control either girl’s portion.

Unless he became guardian.

The forged custody documents suddenly made financial sense.

So did the obsession.

So did the photographs.

Bennett continued reviewing the trust records.

Then she stopped.

“There’s a problem.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“The trust administrator received a legal amendment eight years ago.”

“What amendment?”

“A declaration stating Emma Pierce was not Daniel’s biological daughter.”

Claire stared.

“That’s false.”

“Yes.”

“Who submitted it?”

Bennett looked at Daniel.

“Samuel Keene.”

Richard had used the falsified hospital blood work to exclude Emma.

That left only one beneficiary.

Lily.

And if Richard could obtain custody of her, he could control millions.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

Another unknown message.

No photograph this time.

Only an address.

Then one sentence.

COME SEE WHAT YOUR MOTHER LEFT YOU.
