Chapter 7 - The House They Wanted)

Lily was discharged that evening with strict feeding instructions and a follow-up appointment.
Claire did not go home.
She went to Rachel's house.
Daniel called twenty-seven times.
Margaret called eleven.
Claire answered neither.
Rachel lived in a small blue house at the end of a quiet street. There was no marble island, no smart refrigerator, no designer nursery.
Claire had never felt safer anywhere.
Rachel gave Claire the guest room.
She moved an old armchair beside the bed for nighttime feedings.
She placed bottled water on the table.
She filled the refrigerator with food.
Then she stood in the doorway and said, "Nobody comes inside unless you want them inside."
Claire almost cried again.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. You haven't tried my cooking."
That made Claire laugh.
It was the first real laugh since Lily's birth.
At 10:14 p.m., Daniel sent a message.
COME HOME AND WE CAN FIX THIS.
At 10:21:
MOM SAYS THE HOSPITAL OVERREACTED.
At 10:36:
YOU ARE KEEPING MY DAUGHTER FROM ME.
At 11:02:
ANSWER ME.
Claire saved every message.
At midnight, another arrived.
I'M SORRY ABOUT THE MILK.
Claire stared at the screen.
It was the first admission in writing.
Then another.
I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD HURT HER.
Claire's hands became cold.
She replied with one sentence.
Why did you do it?
Daniel answered after seven minutes.
No explanation.
Just:
COME HOME.
Claire did not respond.
The next morning, Rachel helped her contact an attorney named Nora Ellis.
Nora listened without interrupting.
When Claire finished, Nora asked, "Do you have copies of the documents you found?"
"Some."
"Any indication they were planning to seek emergency guardianship?"
"Yes."
"Send everything."
Two hours later, Nora called back.
Her voice was different.
"Claire, there's something in these files you didn't mention."
Claire sat up.
"What?"
"A property document."
"I didn't see one."
"It's in the same folder."
Rachel looked over from the kitchen table.
Nora continued.
"Three months ago Daniel's mother transferred a lake house into a family trust."
Claire frowned.
"What does that have to do with Lily?"
"The trust names Daniel as successor trustee."
"So?"
"There is a condition."
Claire waited.
"Daniel receives full control after Margaret's death, but Margaret can remove him while she's alive."
Claire still did not understand.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because there are communications with Margaret's attorney suggesting she threatened to remove Daniel from the trust unless he cooperated with what she called the Lily plan."
Claire stopped breathing.
"What plan?"
"I don't have everything yet."
Nora paused.
"But I have enough to tell you this wasn't spontaneous."
Rachel pulled out a chair and sat beside Claire.
Nora continued.
"There are emails from before Lily was born."
Claire whispered, "Before?"
"At least seven weeks before."
Claire felt sick.
For seven weeks, she had decorated a nursery with Daniel.
For seven weeks, he had rubbed her back when she could not sleep.
For seven weeks, he had put his hand on her stomach and smiled when Lily kicked.
And during those same weeks, he had apparently discussed removing Claire from her own child's life.
"What exactly did they say?"
"I'll send you copies."
The email arrived minutes later.
Claire opened the first message.
Margaret to Daniel.
If Claire proves as fragile as I expect, we need to be prepared.
Second message.
Daniel to Margaret.
She won't agree to you taking over.
Third.
Margaret.
She will not need to agree if professionals determine she is incapable.
Claire covered her mouth.
Rachel moved closer.
Another exchange.
Daniel.
What do you want me to do?
Margaret.
Observe. Record. Do not rescue her from every difficult moment. Let people see what motherhood does to her.
Claire stopped reading.
There was more.
Much more.
But one line at the bottom caught her attention.
It was from Daniel.
And what if nothing happens?
Margaret's answer came twelve minutes later.
Then something will have to happen.
Claire read the sentence again.
Her eyes moved toward Lily sleeping in the bassinet.
Rachel whispered, "Claire?"
Claire could barely speak.
"They didn't wait for me to fail."
Rachel read the message.
Her face hardened.
Claire looked at her daughter.
"They decided to make me fail."
Her phone rang.
Nora.
Claire answered.
"There is one more thing," the attorney said.
"What?"
"Margaret filed something this morning."
Claire's hand tightened around the phone.
"What did she file?"
"A petition."
"For what?"
May you like
Nora hesitated.
"Temporary custody of Lily."
