THE LAST BOTTLE / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - Nine Fifteen)

Claire did not tell Daniel about the appointment.

At 8:20 the next morning, she placed Lily in the infant carrier and told Daniel she was going for a walk.

Daniel looked at the carrier.

"For an hour?"

"Maybe."

"It's cold."

"She's covered."

He stepped into the doorway.

Claire felt her body tense.

"Where are you going?"

"Coffee."

"I'll drive you."

"No."

Daniel stared at her.

Claire forced a small laugh.

"I've been trapped in this house for a week. I need ten minutes where nobody monitors me."

The word monitors hung between them.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Then Lily started crying.

Claire used the distraction.

"I need to go."

Daniel stepped aside.

Rachel waited two blocks away.

Claire climbed into her car with Lily.

Rachel pulled away immediately.

"You okay?"

"No."

"Good answer."

Claire almost smiled.

At Dr. Moore's office, Lily was weighed twice.

Dr. Moore studied the number.

"She's lost more than I expected."

Claire felt her stomach drop.

"How much?"

Dr. Moore explained.

Not catastrophic.

Not irreversible.

But concerning.

Lily showed early signs that she was not consistently receiving enough fluid.

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I feed her whenever she wakes."

"I believe you."

"Then why?"

Dr. Moore looked at Rachel.

Rachel nodded.

Claire had already given permission to speak freely.

Claire showed the doctor the videos.

Daniel pouring out milk.

The refrigerator logs.

The canceled appointment.

Dr. Moore's expression changed from clinical concern to something harder.

"Is he preventing you from feeding her directly?"

"Not always."

"Has he taken the baby from you during feeds?"

"Twice."

"Has anyone told you to delay feeding despite hunger cues?"

"Every day."

Dr. Moore set down her pen.

"Claire, I want Lily assessed at the hospital."

Claire felt panic.

"Is she in danger?"

"Right now she is alert. That's good. But I don't want to guess."

Rachel touched Claire's shoulder.

"We're going."

Claire nodded.

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

She declined it.

He called again.

Then Margaret.

Then Daniel.

Then an unknown number.

Rachel looked at the screen.

"Turn it off."

Claire hesitated.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I want the messages."

Daniel texted.

WHERE ARE YOU?

Then:

BRING LILY HOME.

Then:

NOW.

Claire showed Rachel.

Rachel took a slow breath.

"Keep those."

Twenty minutes later they were in the pediatric assessment unit.

A nurse checked Lily.

Then another.

Blood work was discussed.

Hydration was monitored.

Claire sat beside the small hospital crib and felt as though every fear she had tried to minimize was becoming real.

Dr. Moore arrived later.

"The good news is we caught this early."

Claire began crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just exhausted tears sliding down her face.

"I should have left sooner."

Dr. Moore pulled a chair closer.

"You are here now."

Claire looked through the glass door.

Rachel was speaking to a hospital social worker.

"What happens next?"

"We make sure Lily is safe."

Claire looked at her daughter.

Then the door opened.

Daniel stood outside.

Margaret was behind him.

Claire's entire body went rigid.

Daniel tried to enter.

The nurse blocked him.

"Sir, give us one moment."

"That's my daughter."

"I understand."

"Move."

The nurse did not.

Margaret leaned around him.

"Claire, what have you done?"

Something about that sentence broke the last piece of hesitation inside Claire.

Not what happened.

Not is Lily okay.

What have you done.

Claire stood.

"What did I do?"

Margaret's face changed when she saw the doctor.

"We've been very worried about Claire."

Dr. Moore said nothing.

Margaret continued.

"She's exhausted. She isn't thinking clearly."

Daniel stepped closer to the doorway.

"Claire, come home."

"No."

His expression hardened.

"This isn't a discussion."

The nurse shifted her stance.

Daniel noticed.

His voice softened.

"Honey, you're overwhelmed."

Claire stared at him.

The same phrase from the videos.

The same phrase in the document.

"You canceled her appointment."

Daniel blinked.

Margaret answered before he could.

"He was trying to protect you."

Claire laughed once.

"From a pediatrician?"

Margaret looked at Dr. Moore.

"I think what we're seeing is postpartum anxiety."

Dr. Moore finally spoke.

"What I'm seeing is a newborn who has not consistently received adequate feeding."

Margaret's face tightened.

"Claire has been breastfeeding constantly."

"Then someone discarding expressed milk would be medically concerning."

Daniel went still.

Claire saw it.

So did Rachel.

Rachel stepped into the hallway.

Daniel looked at her.

"What did you tell them?"

Rachel folded her arms.

"The truth."

Daniel's jaw flexed.

Margaret turned toward him.

For half a second, fear passed between mother and son.

Then Margaret recovered.

"Daniel has no idea what she's talking about."

Claire unlocked her phone.

She pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the small room.

"Yeah. I did it."

His face became white.

The video continued.

"No, she didn't see."

Margaret's expression changed.

Then came the final sentence.

"How many more nights before she looks incapable?"

Nobody moved.

The nurse looked at Daniel.

Rachel looked at Margaret.

Dr. Moore looked at Claire.

Daniel whispered, "You went through my computer."

Claire stopped the video.

"No."

She looked him directly in the eyes.

"You filmed yourself."

Margaret grabbed Daniel's arm.

"We're leaving."

Daniel resisted.

"Mom."

"Now."

Claire watched them walk away.

At the end of the corridor, Margaret turned back.

The warmth was gone from her face.

So was the concern.

She looked at Claire with naked hatred.

Then she mouthed three words.

May you like

You will regret this.

Claire believed her.
