Chapter 9 - The Woman with Lydia’s Face

The newcomer called herself Evelyn Cross.

She was the same age as Lydia, with similar features arranged into a harder expression. A pale scar ran from her left temple to her ear. She held the gun steadily.

Grant looked startled.

That gave Lydia one precious fact: Evelyn was not part of his plan.

Celeste raised her hands.

“Evelyn, listen to me.”

“I listened for thirty-seven years.”

Mara remained on her knees, Grant’s weapon still at her neck.

Daniel moved Hope behind a steel cabinet.

Evelyn kept her eyes on Celeste. “You took the Lane child from St. Agatha’s and gave her to Margaret.”

Celeste shook her head. “The records were altered during the fire. I did not know which child was which.”

“You knew enough to keep one.”

“I kept Lydia alive.”

“And left me to Cedar House.”

Lydia looked at the transfer file.

According to the photographs, the baby transferred to Lane was not biologically identified. The labels could have been changed. Cedar House records were powerful, but they were created by liars.

“Why should any of us trust the registry?” Lydia asked.

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Because it is the one thing Cedar House never falsified internally. Their power depended on knowing the truth even when everyone else believed a lie.”

Grant pressed the gun harder against Mara’s neck.

“Touching reunion, but we have business.”

Evelyn smiled without warmth. “You think you are still in control?”

She pressed a remote.

Steel shutters fell between Grant and the main exit. He dragged Mara backward, but the corridor behind him sealed too.

Evelyn had taken control of the archive.

“I have spent twelve years inside Cedar House,” she said. “I fed Daniel information. I moved Hope. I arranged the call from the river. I let Grant believe he was chasing the seal.”

Daniel looked at her. “You said you would free us.”

“I did.”

“You used my daughter as bait.”

“I kept her alive.”

The same excuse. Different mouth.

Lydia understood the pattern. Cedar House taught everyone to justify cruelty by pointing to a worse alternative.

“What do you want?” Lydia asked.

“The registry.”

“It is open.”

“Not fully. The Lane biometric key unlocked one layer. The original heir must authorize export.”

Mara said, “You think that is you.”

Evelyn glanced at the screen. “The system just confirmed it.”

“It confirmed records, not truth.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

Grant seized the distraction. He shoved Mara forward and fired at Evelyn.

Mara twisted aside.

The bullet struck the console.

Sparks exploded. Archive lights flickered. Daniel pulled Hope behind cover. Lydia dropped to the floor.

Celeste ran toward Mara.

Grant fired again.

Celeste jerked and fell.

Mara caught her before she hit the ground.

For one second, everyone stopped.

Grant fled through a maintenance gap created by the damaged shutter.

Evelyn fired after him, but missed.

Lydia crawled to Celeste. Blood spread across her blouse near the shoulder, dark but not immediately fatal. Mara pressed both hands over the wound.

“Stay with me,” Mara said.

Celeste stared at her daughter.

“I never stopped looking for you.”

Mara’s face crumpled. “Which daughter?”

Celeste could not answer.

The damaged console began issuing warnings.

ARCHIVE PURGE INITIATED.

Evelyn rushed to the controls. “Grant triggered a destruction protocol.”

Sprinklers activated, but instead of water, solvent sprayed across the upper shelves.

Files began dissolving.

Elias’s voice came through the stairwell. “Everyone out!”

He appeared with officers and a medical team. Smoke rolled behind him.

Evelyn connected a portable drive to the console.

Lydia grabbed her arm. “You’ll die in here.”

“If I leave without the registry, everyone Cedar House owns remains protected.”

“How long?”

“Six minutes.”

Daniel carried Hope toward the exit. Mara and paramedics lifted Celeste onto a stretcher.

Lydia remained.

Evelyn looked at her. “Why?”

“Because whether we are sisters, strangers, or stolen children, Grant wants us divided.”

The export bar moved slowly.

Twenty percent.

Thirty-two.

The solvent reached the central shelves.

Elias shouted that the tunnel roof was failing.

At seventy-one percent, the screen froze.

AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED: PRIMARY LANE HEIR.

Two biometric pads lit.

One beneath Lydia.

One beneath Mara.

Evelyn stared at both.

“There should be only one.”

Mara, halfway up the stairs, saw the prompt.

She returned despite Elias’s protest.

Lydia placed her hand on the first pad.

Mara placed hers on the second.

The system displayed:

DUAL MATCH ACCEPTED.

Evelyn whispered, “That is impossible.”

The export completed.

Then a third line appeared.

A third heir remained alive.

Name sealed.

Location active.

Before they could open the record, the archive ceiling collapsed.
