Chapter 10 - The Heir Who Was Never Missing

They escaped through the nursery tunnel seconds before the archive imploded.

The house shook. Windows shattered. The front porch—the place where Grant had pushed Lydia—split along the foundation and sank several inches.

Fire crews fought the underground blaze until morning.

Celeste survived surgery. The bullet had missed her heart, but she remained under guard and under suspicion. Her confession implicated doctors, attorneys, trustees, and at least two retired judges. It also created more questions than answers.

Mara refused to leave the hospital.

Lydia understood. Celeste had been her mother, then a ghost, then Margaret, then possibly the woman who had stolen Mara’s identity. Love and betrayal could occupy the same chair.

The portable drive Evelyn saved contained seventy percent of the registry. Enough to expose a network. Not enough to identify its central authority.

Grant remained missing.

So did Evelyn.

She disappeared during the evacuation, taking one encrypted copy of the files.

Daniel and Hope were placed in protective custody. Daniel’s health was fragile, but he refused sedation until he spoke privately with Lydia.

They met in a guarded hospital room.

For several minutes they simply looked at each other.

“I thought you left because of me,” Lydia said.

“Grant told you that?”

“Everyone did.”

Daniel closed his eyes. “I found out he was reporting on us before you married him. I tried to warn Mother. She said we needed proof. Two days later, Grant drove me to the station. He had a gun.”

“Why didn’t they kill you?”

“The trust required my living consent. When I refused, they tried to break me. Later they used me to father an heir.”

Lydia’s stomach turned. “Hope’s mother?”

“A woman named Rachel Saye. Another prisoner. She died after childbirth. Hope was raised inside Cedar facilities.”

Daniel’s hands trembled.

“I could not protect them.”

“You protected Hope long enough for her to reach us.”

He looked toward the door where Hope sat with a child advocate.

“The registry said there was a third heir,” Lydia said.

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

Lydia waited.

“The third heir was never missing,” he said. “He was hidden in plain sight.”

“Who?”

Daniel reached for the water but could not steady the cup.

“Grant.”

Lydia stared.

Daniel explained that Grant’s father, Thomas Mercer, had been born to Lydia’s grandfather and a Cedar House operative. The birth was concealed to prevent a scandal. That made Grant a blood descendant of the Lane line.

“He did not only marry into the trust,” Daniel said. “He believed part of it belonged to him.”

“Why would the system hide his name?”

“Because he was registered under Cedar authority, not family authority. A controlled heir.”

A keeper and an heir.

Grant’s obsession sharpened into focus. He did not want merely to steal Lydia’s property. He wanted the registry to erase the version of history that made him subordinate.

Daniel leaned closer.

“There is something else. The archive copy will show transactions, but the controlling ledger is not underground.”

“Where is it?”

“Inside St. Agatha’s Hospital. Cedar House began with birth records. The hospital is the root.”

The same hospital that treated Margaret. The same hospital that employed Celeste. The same hospital where Lydia, Mara, and Evelyn had been born.

Mara entered quietly.

“St. Agatha’s closed ten years ago.”

Daniel looked at her. “The public building closed. The records wing moved below the old chapel.”

Mara placed a phone on the table.

A message had arrived through a dead Cedar House channel.

It showed Grant standing inside a room lined with baptismal ledgers. Behind him was Evelyn, bound to a chair.

Grant held a silver surgical instrument near her throat.

He said, “I have the third seal.”

Then he turned the camera toward a hospital bassinet.

Inside lay a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

A tag around the baby’s wrist read:

L-13.

Lydia’s voice failed.

“Whose child is that?”

Daniel went pale.

“Hope was registered L-13.”

Mara enlarged the image.

The date on the infant’s tag was today.

Cedar House had begun another transfer.

And someone at an active hospital had just handed Grant a newborn.
