Chapter 12 - The Dead Boy’s Name

Celeste was awake when Lydia, Mara, and Elias returned to the hospital.

Security surrounded her room. No electronic device was allowed inside. Still, someone had placed a cedar leaf on her pillow while she slept.

Mara held up Grant’s death certificate.

“Who is he?”

Celeste looked toward the guarded door.

“His birth name was Adrian Cross.”

Evelyn, standing near the window with a bandage around her wrist, went still.

“Cross?” Lydia asked.

Celeste nodded.

Adrian and Evelyn were twins.

They were born at St. Agatha’s to a Cedar House operative named Ruth Cross. The network separated them. Evelyn was retained inside the program because her biometric markers resembled the Lane line. Adrian was placed with Thomas Mercer after the real Grant Mercer drowned.

“Thomas needed a son with no legal past,” Celeste said. “Cedar House needed a boy who could be shaped into a keeper.”

Evelyn’s voice was flat. “He is my brother.”

“Yes.”

Grant—Adrian—had spent his entire life inside a stolen identity. He learned early that names were tools and family was leverage. Thomas raised him to believe the Lane trust should belong to them.

“Did he know?” Mara asked.

“Not at first. He discovered the truth when Daniel found the registry.”

Lydia sat beside Celeste.

“Why did you never tell me?”

“Because knowledge was dangerous.”

“So was ignorance.”

Celeste accepted the rebuke.

The newborn from St. Agatha’s was identified through an emergency DNA search. Her mother, a young woman named Nina Bell, had been told the baby died minutes after birth at the modern maternity center. A nurse falsified the record and moved the infant through the underground passage.

Nina was reunited with her daughter under protection.

The nurse disappeared.

Publicly, authorities announced an investigation into hospital trafficking and identity fraud. They did not release the Lane trust details. Too many judges and officials appeared in the partial registry, and prosecutors feared warning the network before arrests.

Grant remained underground.

Evelyn wanted to hunt him immediately.

“He will go to the controlling ledger,” she said.

Daniel disagreed. “He cannot use it without an accepted identity.”

“He will create one.”

Celeste closed her eyes. “There is one identity Cedar House reserved for emergencies.”

Everyone waited.

“The Founder.”

Cedar House’s original controller had no public name. The Founder identity could assume control when bloodline disputes threatened the network. It was passed through private succession, not civil records.

“Who holds it now?” Lydia asked.

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

“Ruth Cross.”

Evelyn’s mother.

Officially, Ruth died in a car accident thirty years earlier.

No body had been recovered.

Another dead woman who might still be alive.

The partial registry included a property called North Cedar Island, owned by a charitable foundation. Satellite images showed an old convalescent estate, private docks, and a power station far larger than the buildings required.

Mara requested a federal operation.

Before approval arrived, Daniel disappeared from protective custody.

His guard was found unconscious. Hope was unharmed but carried a note in Daniel’s handwriting:

I HAVE TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED. DO NOT FOLLOW.

Hope insisted someone had called her father minutes before he left.

“A woman,” she said. “She told him Rachel was alive.”

Daniel’s imprisoned partner, Hope’s mother, had supposedly died eight years earlier.

Grant knew exactly which hope would make Daniel abandon caution.

Elias traced the call to North Cedar Island.

By midnight, a storm had closed the river to civilian traffic. Federal approval was delayed by a judge whose name appeared in the registry.

Lydia understood the message.

Cedar House did not need to defeat the law. It only needed to slow it.

Evelyn produced keys to a private patrol boat.

“I kept assets they did not know I controlled.”

Mara looked at her. “Going without support is reckless.”

“So is waiting for a compromised judge.”

Lydia thought of Daniel counting years on a wall. She thought of Hope losing him again.

“I’m going.”

Mara swore softly, then picked up her coat.

Celeste caught Lydia’s hand.

“On the island, you may see someone who looks like Margaret.”

Lydia froze.

“What do you mean?”

“Cedar House used doubles when a public appearance was required.”

“Is my mother dead?”

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.

“The woman you held died. But I no longer know whether she was the only Margaret Lane.”

Thunder shook the windows.

A message arrived on Lydia’s secure phone.

It contained a live photograph of Daniel kneeling before an elderly woman.

The woman wore Margaret’s wedding ring.

Behind her stood Grant.
