THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Dinner of Small Humiliations

Gloria invited twelve guests to dinner without asking Claire.

They arrived in expensive cars carrying wine, flowers, and the comfortable curiosity of people who expected entertainment.

Most were Gloria’s friends from charity committees and private clubs. Several had attended Claire and Daniel’s wedding. All of them greeted Daniel as though he owned the house.

Gloria made sure they did.

“My son chose every detail in this room,” she announced.

Claire stood beside the fireplace holding a glass of water.

Daniel had not chosen the curtains, the furniture, the paintings, or the fireplace tiles.

Her grandmother had.

Daniel smiled across the room.

Claire smiled back.

During dinner, Gloria told a story about Daniel rescuing the property from financial trouble.

“The taxes were overwhelming,” she said. “Claire simply wasn’t prepared to manage a house of this size.”

Claire placed her fork down.

Daniel watched her.

She understood the warning in his eyes.

Smile.

One of the guests, Marianne Cole, leaned toward Claire.

“I had no idea the house was in danger.”

“It wasn’t,” Claire replied.

Gloria laughed.

“Claire never likes discussing money.”

“I discuss accurate money.”

The table became quiet.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Mom means the maintenance was complicated.”

“No,” Gloria said. “I mean you saved this house.”

Claire looked directly at her.

“How?”

Gloria blinked.

“With your business experience.”

“What exactly did Daniel pay for?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Claire.”

“I’m curious.”

Gloria lifted her wine.

“A marriage is a partnership. Keeping a ledger is terribly unromantic.”

“Then it should be easy to answer without one.”

Marianne lowered her eyes to her plate.

Another guest changed the subject, but the mood had shifted.

After dinner, Claire carried a tray toward the kitchen when she heard two women speaking in the powder room.

“Gloria said Claire had a breakdown last year,” one whispered.

“She did?”

“Apparently she becomes confused about money and ownership.”

Claire stopped.

The second woman lowered her voice.

“Gloria said Daniel may need legal authority to protect the estate.”

Claire continued walking before they opened the door.

Inside the kitchen, Daniel stood beside the sink.

“You embarrassed my mother.”

“She told your friends I am mentally unstable.”

“She’s worried about you.”

“I’m not confused.”

“Claire, you’ve been suspicious for weeks.”

“Because documents are missing, locks are being changed, and your mother is telling people you control my property.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“You hear what you want to hear.”

“I heard her promise this house to herself.”

His face became still.

“Were you listening to us?”

“You were speaking outside the kitchen.”

“That was private.”

“So was my office.”

Daniel looked away.

Claire watched him carefully.

“You installed the second lock.”

“No.”

“You knew about it.”

“No.”

“Then look at me and say you had nothing to do with it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I had nothing to do with it.”

He spoke smoothly.

Too smoothly.

Claire’s phone vibrated in her pocket.

The office camera had detected movement.

She said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“You need rest. My mother thinks you should speak to someone.”

“A doctor?”

“A therapist.”

“Chosen by Gloria?”

“Recommended by her.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Of course.”

She left Daniel in the kitchen and went upstairs.

From the privacy of the bathroom, she opened the camera feed.

The recording showed Gloria entering Claire’s office with a code.

Daniel followed.

Gloria opened the bottom drawer of Claire’s desk and removed a folder containing copies of Claire’s passport, trust documents, and signature samples.

Daniel stood beside her.

He did not object.

He did not look surprised.

Instead, he handed Gloria a small scanner.

Then he looked directly toward the smoke detector.

Claire’s breath caught.

Daniel stared at the hidden camera for three long seconds.

Had he seen it?

He stepped closer.

The recording shook slightly as his hand reached upward.

Then Gloria said something from behind him.

Daniel lowered his arm.

“What?” he asked.

Gloria held up Claire’s passport.

“I said this photograph will work.”

The camera continued recording.

Daniel had looked directly at it.

But he had not removed it.

That meant one of two things.

May you like

Either he had not recognized the camera.

Or he wanted Claire to see what happened next.
