THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Name Eleanor Buried

Gloria refused to say more.

She claimed Eleanor Whitmore had built the family’s wealth by betraying a former business partner. According to Gloria, that partner’s descendants had waited decades for an opportunity to reclaim what they believed belonged to them.

Claire did not believe the story.

But she believed Gloria believed it.

Simon searched Eleanor’s old business records.

The Whitmore fortune came from land, manufacturing, and conservative investments. Eleanor had managed it carefully, avoiding debt and maintaining strict privacy.

Nothing in the official records suggested a stolen partnership.

Then Claire remembered the locked cabinet in the library.

Eleanor had kept it sealed for as long as Claire could remember. After her death, Simon searched the cabinet and found only old photographs, letters, and property maps.

Or so they had thought.

Claire returned to the library after midnight.

Daniel and Gloria were asleep.

She removed the lower drawer and found a narrow gap behind the wooden frame. Inside was a brass key wrapped in faded blue cloth.

The key opened a compartment beneath the cabinet.

Claire discovered a ledger, a packet of letters, and a photograph of Eleanor standing beside a man Claire did not recognize.

On the back, Eleanor had written:

Alexander Vale, 1978. The day we chose opposite sides.

Vale.

Claire stared at the surname.

Miriam Vale.

Simon Reed had always described Miriam as Eleanor’s closest friend, but Eleanor’s photograph suggested a much older connection between the families.

Claire opened the ledger.

The early pages recorded land purchases made by Whitmore Properties. Later entries described payments to an entity called Vale Industrial Trust.

The final page contained a handwritten note.

Alexander believes Hawthorne belongs to him.

He is wrong about the land but right about the betrayal.

If he returns, do not protect the secret. Protect Claire.

Beneath the note was a list of four names.

Eleanor Whitmore.

Alexander Vale.

Miriam Vale.

Adrian Cross.

Claire had never heard of Adrian Cross.

She photographed every page and sent the images to Simon through the encrypted system.

Before he could respond, the library lights turned on.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

His face looked exhausted.

“What did you find?” he asked.

Claire closed the ledger.

“What did you know?”

“Not enough.”

“Who is Adrian Cross?”

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother never gave me a name.”

“Did she tell you about Alexander Vale?”

“No.”

“Did you know Miriam was connected to my grandmother before the trust?”

“I knew their families had history.”

Claire held up the ledger.

“Did Gloria know this was here?”

Daniel looked at the cabinet.

“I don’t think so.”

“Then how did she know Eleanor was hiding something?”

Daniel entered the room and closed the door.

“Because someone sent her letters.”

“What letters?”

“They started after my father died. They said the Mercer family had been denied something that belonged to us.”

“The house?”

“Not exactly. Access.”

“To what?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I never understood.”

Claire studied him.

“Show me the letters.”

“My mother has them.”

“Where?”

“She keeps them in a bank deposit box.”

“At Davenport?”

Daniel nodded.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

Simon had replied.

Do not let Daniel see the ledger. Adrian Cross died in 1994.

A second message appeared.

But someone using his identity opened Hawthorne Holdings last year.

Claire looked up.

Daniel was watching her phone.

“What did Simon say?”

“That Adrian Cross is dead.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“My mother knows.”

“Knows what?”

“She met him three weeks ago.”

Claire stared at him.

“You said he was dead.”

“I said that is the name he used.”

A sound came from the hallway.

The library door handle moved.

Daniel quickly turned the lock.

Gloria’s voice came from the other side.

“Daniel?”

He did not answer.

She tried the handle again.

“Open the door.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

For the first time, they shared the same fear.

Gloria knocked once.

May you like

Then she spoke calmly.

“I know you found the key.”
