THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - Gloria Moves In

Gloria transformed the guest room into her private suite within forty-eight hours.

She replaced Claire’s linen curtains with heavy velvet panels, moved Eleanor’s antique writing desk into the hallway, and instructed the housekeeper to remove every photograph that showed Claire without Daniel.

When Claire objected, Gloria smiled.

“I’m trying to make the room feel less temporary.”

“You said you were staying for a weekend.”

“I told you plans changed.”

“How long are you staying?”

Gloria adjusted a framed photograph of Daniel as a child.

“Until my son no longer needs me.”

Claire looked at Daniel, expecting him to speak.

He sat on the edge of the bed checking messages.

“Mom’s apartment is being renovated,” he said.

“Since when?”

“Since last week.”

Gloria’s eyes met Claire’s in the mirror.

“The contractor found mold.”

Claire knew the apartment building well. Gloria had spent months bragging about its maintenance team.

“Which contractor?”

Gloria turned.

“Must every conversation with you become a legal hearing?”

The words were almost identical to Daniel’s.

Claire felt a cold pressure settle in her chest.

That night, she searched public building records. No renovation permits had been filed for Gloria’s apartment. There were no mold complaints. No emergency work orders.

Gloria had moved in under false pretenses.

The next morning, Claire found her in the kitchen speaking quietly on the phone.

“No, she still thinks it belongs to the trust,” Gloria said.

Claire paused outside the doorway.

Gloria listened.

“Daniel will handle the trustees. I am handling her.”

Claire stepped into the kitchen.

Gloria ended the call immediately.

“Who were you speaking to?” Claire asked.

“A friend.”

“Which friend?”

“A friend who understands boundaries.”

Claire walked toward the coffee machine.

“I agree. Boundaries are important.”

Gloria smiled.

“You shouldn’t listen to private conversations.”

“You shouldn’t hold them in my kitchen.”

Gloria’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, neither woman pretended.

“This house has made you arrogant,” Gloria said.

“This house has made you comfortable.”

“My son made you comfortable.”

Claire turned.

“Daniel moved into a house I already owned. He joined a life I had already built. Do not confuse his presence with my foundation.”

Gloria approached until only the kitchen island separated them.

“You think a piece of paper makes you powerful.”

“No. It makes the truth easy to prove.”

Gloria’s expression changed for less than a second.

It was enough.

She was frightened of proof.

Later that afternoon, Claire returned from a meeting and discovered that the lock on her home office had been replaced.

Daniel stood inside with a locksmith.

“What happened?” Claire asked.

“The lock jammed.”

“It worked this morning.”

“It stopped working.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Daniel handed her a new key.

“You were busy.”

Claire tested it.

The key turned, but the door did not open.

Daniel took it from her, adjusted the angle, and unlocked the door.

“See? It works.”

Claire looked at the key.

It had not been cut incorrectly.

It had been cut for a different lock.

Daniel had given her a false key to her own office.

She waited until he left, then called another locksmith.

Behind the new lock, the locksmith discovered a second mechanism connected to a keypad on the inside of the door.

Someone could enter with a private code while making Claire believe the room was secured.

The locksmith removed it and handed it to her.

Claire placed the mechanism inside a sealed bag.

Then she installed a camera in the smoke detector above the office door.

She did not tell Daniel.

She did not tell Gloria.

She told only Simon.

“Do not confront them yet,” he warned.

Claire stared at the tiny camera feed on her phone.

“I’m done confronting people who rehearse their lies together.”

“What are you going to do?”

May you like

Claire looked toward the guest room.

“I’m going to let them believe I’m still smiling.”
