THE HOUSE THAT WANTED EMMA / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The House at Lake George)

Police reached the Lake George estate before Christopher.

Cole had tried to keep him away.

Christopher refused.

Emma remained at a secure location with Yvette, Evelyn, and two officers.

Christopher arrived behind an armored police vehicle.

The estate was smaller than the Whitmore mansion.

Older.

Dark windows overlooked the lake.

No cars were visible.

Grant had given them the security codes.

They did not work.

The house had been prepared.

Cole ordered Christopher to remain behind the perimeter.

Then a speaker above the gate crackled.

"Christopher."

The voice was not distorted.

Christopher recognized it from the phone.

Charles Hale.

"Come inside."

Cole shook his head.

Christopher ignored him.

"Where is Rachel?"

"Alive."

"Show me."

A second later, a light appeared in an upstairs window.

Rachel stood behind the glass.

Christopher's heart stopped.

Her hands appeared free.

But a man stood behind her.

Only his silhouette was visible.

"Come inside alone."

Cole whispered, "No."

Christopher stared at Rachel.

She lifted one hand.

Then tapped the glass twice.

Pause.

Three times.

Pause.

Once.

Christopher frowned.

Rachel used to play memory games with him.

Numbers.

Sequences.

Two three one.

He looked toward the house.

Second floor.

Third window.

First entrance?

Cole understood.

A tactical team moved quietly around the side.

Christopher raised his hands.

"I'm coming."

He entered the gate.

The front door opened automatically.

Inside, speakers guided him.

"Library."

Christopher walked.

The library contained one chair.

One table.

One computer monitor.

Charles appeared on screen.

He was in his late sixties.

Silver hair.

Thin face.

Christopher saw something familiar around the eyes.

His own reflection distorted by age.

"So," Charles said. "My son."

Christopher felt nothing.

"You're not my father."

"Biology disagrees."

"Biology is all you have."

Charles smiled.

"Thomas taught you that."

"He raised me."

"He purchased you."

Christopher's jaw tightened.

"You sold me."

The smile vanished.

That struck something.

Good.

"Where is Rachel?"

"Safe."

"You tried to kill our daughter."

Charles leaned closer to the camera.

"I tried to correct Thomas's final insult."

"She's five."

"She is a legal instrument wearing a child's face."

Christopher's disgust deepened.

"No. She's Emma."

Charles looked almost amused.

"Thomas designed everything so that one day the real Whitmore bloodline would return. Rachel discovered it. Then she married you."

"She didn't know."

"Eventually she did."

Christopher froze.

"When?"

"Before Emma was born."

"You're lying."

"Ask her."

Christopher remembered Rachel's secrecy.

The hidden safe.

The hospital bracelet.

The locket.

Maybe she had known pieces.

Charles continued.

"Rachel discovered your birth records while researching the trust."

"Then why stay with me?"

"Because she loved you."

Charles said the word as if it were a disease.

"That was Thomas's favorite weakness too."

Christopher moved closer to the screen.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing anymore."

"Then release Rachel."

"I will."

Christopher did not believe him.

Charles smiled.

"After you sign."

A printer beside Christopher activated.

Pages emerged.

A trust renunciation.

Christopher read quickly.

If signed, he would disclaim all claims on behalf of Emma arising through the Whitmore estate.

It would create years of litigation.

Maybe destroy the trust.

Maybe surrender hundreds of millions.

Christopher picked up the pen.

Charles laughed.

"That easy?"

"It's money."

"Your father spent his life protecting it."

"My father made his choices."

Christopher signed.

Charles stared.

Christopher signed every page.

"Done."

Charles's smile faded.

"You didn't even negotiate."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you made the same mistake Juliette made."

Charles's eyes narrowed.

"You think this is a house."

Christopher dropped the pen.

"It's my daughter."

For the first time, Charles looked angry.

A crash sounded upstairs.

Then shouting.

The tactical team had entered through the second floor third window and side entrance.

Rachel screamed.

Christopher ran.

Gunfire erupted somewhere above.

He reached the staircase.

Cole shouted behind him.

"Christopher!"

Christopher kept moving.

At the top floor, an officer pulled Rachel from a bedroom.

She was crying but alive.

Christopher stopped.

Rachel saw him.

For one second, three years disappeared.

Then she ran to him.

Christopher caught her.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times.

He had imagined questions.

Anger.

Tears.

Instead he simply held her.

Rachel buried her face against his chest.

"I'm sorry."

Christopher closed his eyes.

"You're alive."

"I'm sorry."

"You're alive."

Behind them officers shouted.

Charles had escaped through a service tunnel.

A vehicle was heard leaving the property.

Cole ordered roadblocks.

But Christopher barely listened.

Rachel was in his arms.

She pulled back suddenly.

"Emma?"

"Safe."

"Where?"

"With Yvette."

Rachel's face changed.

Christopher saw it.

"What?"

"We have to go."

"Rachel?"

"We have to get Emma."

"She's protected."

"No."

Rachel grabbed his arm.

"Christopher, Yvette isn't who you think she is."

He stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Rachel looked terrified.

"Yvette was the one who brought me to Charles after the crash."

Christopher felt cold.

"No."

"She said she was helping me."

"Yvette protected Emma."

"She protected Emma because Charles needed her alive until the documents were found."

Christopher pulled out his phone.

No signal inside the house.

He ran downstairs.

Outside, the signal returned.

He called Evelyn.

No answer.

Yvette.

No answer.

The officer assigned to the safe house answered.

Christopher's heart pounded.

"Where's Emma?"

A pause.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

"Where is my daughter?"

The officer sounded confused.

"Mrs. Shaw picked her up twenty minutes ago."

Christopher looked at Evelyn's name on his phone.

"No."

"What?"

"Evelyn is with Emma?"

"She showed authorization."

Christopher stared at Rachel.

Rachel shook her head.

"Christopher."

His mouth went dry.

May you like

"What?"

Rachel whispered, "Evelyn was Charles's lawyer."
