THE HOUSE THAT WANTED EMMA / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Grant Came Home)

Grant Mercer walked into the police station at 7:40 the next morning.

No negotiation.

No lawyer.

No attempt to flee.

He placed his hands on the counter and said, "I need to speak to Christopher Whitmore before Charles kills the girl."

Cole refused the private meeting.

Christopher demanded one anyway.

They compromised.

Grant sat behind glass in an interview room.

Christopher sat across from him.

For the first time, he noticed similarities.

Not obvious ones.

The shape of the eyes.

The angle of the jaw.

Things that could have meant nothing.

Now they meant too much.

"Are you my brother?"

Grant looked exhausted.

"Yes."

"Who is our father?"

"Charles Hale."

Christopher thought of Margaret's vanished brother.

"Why did Thomas raise me?"

"Because Charles gave you to him."

"Why?"

Grant laughed quietly.

"You think families like yours only buy companies?"

Christopher said nothing.

"Thomas and his wife couldn't have children."

"My mother gave birth to me."

"Your mother gave birth to a baby."

Christopher felt cold.

Grant continued.

"That baby wasn't you."

The maternity switch had happened a generation earlier.

Christopher had been born in another hospital under another name.

Thomas and his wife took him home.

The biological Whitmore infant was sent elsewhere.

"Where?"

Grant looked at him.

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I spent twenty years trying to find out."

"Why?"

"Because Thomas discovered what happened."

"When?"

"When you were six."

The age Christopher's surveillance file began.

"Did he give me back?"

"No."

"Did my mother know?"

"Eventually."

Christopher closed his eyes.

"Who was the Whitmore baby?"

"I don't know."

"Then what does Emma have to do with this?"

"Everything."

Grant leaned forward.

"The trust doesn't simply require Thomas's descendants."

Christopher remembered Evelyn's summary.

"What does it require?"

"The direct biological descendants of your grandfather."

Christopher stared.

"If I'm not Thomas's biological son, Emma doesn't qualify."

"Correct."

"So she owns nothing."

"Legally, that question could destroy the estate for years."

Christopher's anger rose.

"You tried to kill her over paperwork?"

Grant's eyes hardened.

"I didn't order Juliette to push Emma."

"You recruited her."

"Yes."

"You manipulated her into marrying me."

"Yes."

"You told her Emma needed to die."

Grant looked down.

"At first."

Christopher wanted to break the glass between them.

Grant continued.

"I believed Emma's death would force probate and expose the trust fraud."

"She's a child."

"I know."

"You don't get to say that as if it fixes anything."

"It doesn't."

Grant looked up.

"Three weeks ago I learned the truth."

"What truth?"

"Emma qualifies."

Christopher frowned.

"How?"

"If you're not a Whitmore."

Grant gave a tired smile.

"Because her mother was."

Christopher stopped breathing.

"Rachel?"

Grant nodded.

"Rachel was the biological descendant."

Christopher's thoughts collided.

Rachel's parents were supposedly ordinary academics from Vermont.

"How?"

"The baby Thomas's mother gave birth to was not lost."

Grant leaned closer.

"She became Rachel's grandmother."

Christopher stared at him.

Two family lines had circled each other for generations without knowing.

Or without admitting they knew.

Rachel had married Christopher.

Their daughter accidentally reunited both branches.

Emma was the first direct biological Whitmore heir in decades.

The last uncontaminated heir.

The words from the clinic wall finally made sense.

"Charles knows?"

"Yes."

"What does he want?"

Grant looked frightened.

"To erase every descendant of the Whitmore bloodline."

"Why?"

"Because he believes the family destroyed his life."

"And you're his son."

"One of them."

Christopher stared.

"How many?"

Grant did not answer.

Christopher's skin chilled.

"Grant."

"Charles had children everywhere."

"How many?"

"At least five."

"Why has no one found him?"

"Because the man everyone calls Charles Hale doesn't officially exist anymore."

"Margaret said he disappeared."

"He changed identities."

"To Victor?"

Grant nodded.

"Victor was his brother. After Victor died, Charles used his credentials."

The clinic.

Dr. V.

Dr. C.

One man wearing a dead brother's name.

"Rachel?"

Grant's face changed.

"Charles caused the crash."

Christopher gripped the edge of the table.

"Why?"

"Rachel discovered the birth records."

"And you?"

"I helped him take her from the scene."

Christopher stood.

Cole moved toward the door.

Grant raised his hands.

"Listen."

"You kidnapped my wife."

"I thought she was dying."

"You kept her hidden for three years."

"Charles did."

"You knew."

"I believed her memory was gone permanently."

Christopher's breathing became ragged.

Grant spoke faster.

"When it began returning, Charles told her you were dangerous."

"Why didn't you tell her the truth?"

"Because by then I knew what Charles did to people who stopped cooperating."

Christopher sat slowly.

Grant looked toward the observation glass.

"Juliette was supposed to get close to you. Access documents. Nothing more."

"You told her Emma had to die."

"I told her what Charles told me."

"And then?"

"I discovered Rachel's grandmother's records."

"You realized Emma was the heir."

"Yes."

"So you changed sides."

Grant gave a hollow laugh.

"I realized I'd spent most of my life helping the man who hated me."

Christopher stared at him.

"Where is Rachel?"

"I don't know."

"Charles took her from the cottage?"

"Probably."

"Where would he go?"

Grant hesitated.

"There is one place."

"Tell me."

"An estate your grandfather owned under another company."

"Where?"

"Near Lake George."

Cole was already moving.

Grant grabbed the edge of the table.

"Christopher."

Christopher stopped.

"If Charles has Rachel, he wants you there."

"I know."

"No. You don't."

Grant looked genuinely terrified.

"He doesn't want money anymore."

"What does he want?"

"He wants Emma to watch you choose."

Christopher stared.

May you like

"Choose what?"

Grant whispered, "Her mother or her inheritance."
