Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Was Erased)

Margaret told the story because she had no choice.

Her maiden name had not always been Bennett.

It had been Hayes.

Thomas and Margaret had grown up in neighboring branches of the same extended family, but Thomas had not been Margaret’s brother.

Emily had.

Half sister, technically.

Their father, Arthur Hayes, had lived two lives.

Two families.

Two sets of children.

When Emily was fourteen, she discovered documents proving Arthur had hidden millions through shell companies.

Then Emily disappeared.

The family claimed she had run away.

She had not.

Arthur placed her in a psychiatric institution under another name.

Daniel looked horrified.

“And you knew?”

“I was seventeen.”

“You grew up!”

Margaret snapped.

“You think I had power?”

“You had forty-seven years!”

Margaret looked away.

Raymond asked, “How did Emily get out?”

“Thomas.”

Claire stared.

“Dad found her?”

Margaret nodded.

Years later.

Thomas discovered Emily living under the name Ellen Price.

He helped her build a new life.

Then he discovered something worse.

Arthur’s financial network had never disappeared.

It had simply changed hands.

“Whose hands?” Laura asked.

Margaret did not answer.

Daniel understood.

“Yours.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I inherited a disaster.”

“You inherited stolen money.”

“I protected this family.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true!”

Daniel stood.

“You arranged a fake burglary!”

“To get the documents before Emily did!”

Laura stared at her.

“So you knew she was coming.”

“Yes.”

“Did you order her to take my daughter?”

“No.”

Laura stepped closer.

“Then why Emily?”

Margaret's eyes moved toward the stairs.

“Because your daughter was named after her.”

“That doesn’t answer me.”

“She thinks it means something.”

“What?”

Margaret's face tightened.

“She thinks Thomas chose your daughter.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My father was supposedly dead before I met Laura.”

“Thomas watched you.”

The words landed hard.

Daniel went still.

“For how long?”

“Years.”

Margaret admitted Thomas had remained near his children from a distance.

He had known about Laura.

Their wedding.

Laura's pregnancy.

And Emily's birth.

Daniel looked physically ill.

“My father watched my life like some fucking television show?”

“He was trying to keep you alive.”

“From who?”

Margaret looked toward the front windows.

Before she could answer, Detective Brooks entered.

“We traced the call.”

Laura jumped up.

“Where?”

“An abandoned house outside Winnetka.”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Brooks stopped him.

“We’re handling it.”

“That’s my daughter.”

“And running into a possible hostage situation gets her killed.”

Raymond spoke.

“Which house?”

Brooks gave the road.

Raymond went pale.

“I know it.”

Margaret stood.

“So do I.”

Laura looked at her.

Margaret whispered, “It belonged to Thomas.”

Then another officer entered carrying a small evidence bag.

Inside was a silver key.

The key Margaret had given Raymond at the mall.

It had been found outside Emily's bedroom window.

Raymond checked his pocket.

His key was gone.

Someone had taken it from him while everyone was arguing.

Detective Brooks looked around the room.

“That means whoever took Emily was inside this house this morning.”

Claire slowly turned.

“Before Margaret arrived?”

Brooks shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at the security timeline.

“After.”
