Chapter 12 - September Seventeenth)

Margaret finally broke.

September 17, 1987 had not been Daniel’s real birthday.

He had been born three days earlier.

The date had been changed.

“Why?” Daniel demanded.

“Because Arthur ordered it.”

“Why would he care about three days?”

Margaret stared at him.

“The Trust.”

Under its original charter, inheritance transferred to Arthur’s first surviving male descendant born after September 16, 1987.

Claire frowned.

“That is absurdly specific.”

“It was designed around another child.”

“What child?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Arthur’s legitimate grandson.”

That boy died hours after birth.

Daniel was born three days too early to qualify.

So Arthur changed the record.

Daniel whispered, “He made me his heir.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret began crying.

“Because you were his.”

Daniel turned away.

The DNA test took less than a day because federal investigators already possessed preserved biological material connected to Arthur.

The probability of direct paternal relationship was overwhelming.

Arthur Hayes was Daniel’s biological father.

Margaret had been nineteen.

Arthur had been fifty-six.

Laura immediately understood the part Margaret could not say.

Daniel understood too.

His rage disappeared.

He sat beside his mother.

For the first time, he stopped questioning her.

Margaret whispered, “Thomas knew something happened. I never told him everything.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t have to.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I hated you for looking like him.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“And then I hated myself for hating you.”

She reached toward him but stopped.

“Thomas saved me. He married me when everyone would have destroyed me. He gave you his name.”

Daniel whispered, “Then why did you betray him?”

“Because Arthur came back.”

The room went still.

“You said he died.”

“I lied.”

“When?”

“Six years after Thomas disappeared.”

Margaret admitted Arthur had resurfaced and threatened Claire, Daniel, and eventually Laura.

Arthur controlled police officers, attorneys, doctors, judges.

Margaret obeyed him.

She transferred money.

Destroyed records.

Tracked Thomas.

And eventually gave Arthur Emily’s location.

Daniel looked at her.

“You were still working for him.”

“I was surviving him.”

Laura understood Margaret better now.

But understanding did not erase what she had done.

“Why steal the blue folder?”

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Because Arthur called me Friday.”

Daniel froze.

“He’s alive?”

Margaret nodded.

“He told me if I didn’t destroy the folder, he would take Emily.”

Laura's voice became deadly.

“And you didn’t tell us.”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“You gave a criminal our house key!”

“I was trying to make Arthur believe the documents were destroyed!”

“And he took my daughter anyway.”

Margaret looked down.

“Yes.”

Laura showed her the message from Thomas.

Margaret stared at the photograph.

“Where does he want you to go?”

“He hasn’t said.”

“Don’t.”

“I need answers.”

“You need to stay away from Thomas.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked directly at Laura.

“Because Thomas isn’t hiding from Arthur anymore.”

“What is he doing?”

“Hunting him.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“How do you know?”

Margaret whispered, “Because Thomas called me last week.”

“What did he say?”

May you like

Margaret’s answer chilled everyone.

“He said only one of them would still be alive when Daniel opened the Trust.”
