Chapter 14 - The Door Under Chicago)

The key opened a property nobody knew Margaret owned.

An abandoned commercial building on Chicago's South Side.

Federal agents wanted the Hayes family nowhere near it.

Daniel ignored them.

Laura did not.

She had learned enough to know that running blindly into buildings was exactly how people died.

The agents entered first.

They discovered a basement.

Inside the basement was a vault door.

Margaret's key opened it.

Beyond the door was an archive.

Not money.

Records.

Thousands of them.

Birth certificates.

Adoption documents.

Property transfers.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Police reports.

Arthur Hayes had spent decades collecting leverage.

Daniel walked between shelves containing pieces of strangers’ lives.

“What the hell was he building?”

Margaret answered.

“Control.”

One shelf contained files on judges.

Another on politicians.

Another on business owners.

Claire found her own name.

Daniel found his.

Laura found Emily's.

It was almost empty.

Only one page.

TRANSFER UPON EIGHTEENTH YEAR.

Laura's hands shook.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked terrified.

“I don't know.”

Claire found another document.

The Preservation Trust charter.

They read it together.

Thomas had been correct.

Daniel could activate the Trust.

But there was a condition.

Activation required three keys.

One belonged to Daniel.

One to Margaret.

The third belonged to Arthur.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Where is yours?”

Margaret reached beneath her blouse and removed a small brass key hanging from a chain.

She had worn it for decades.

Claire whispered, “And Arthur?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A federal agent entered.

“We found somebody.”

Everyone turned.

A hidden room existed beyond the archive.

Inside was a hospital bed.

Oxygen equipment.

Medication.

Fresh food.

Someone had been living there.

Laura saw a photograph beside the bed.

Daniel as a child.

Claire as a child.

Margaret at nineteen.

Arthur Hayes had been there.

Recently.

On the bedside table was a letter.

DANIEL.

Daniel opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, Thomas has convinced you I am the monster.

Perhaps I am.

But Thomas has lied to you about the Trust.

Your mother knows why.

Ask her what happens when all three keys are turned.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“What happens?”

Margaret whispered, “I don’t know.”

Claire stared at her.

“You’re lying again.”

“I’m not.”

Laura examined the room.

Something bothered her.

A cup of coffee.

Still warm.

“Daniel.”

He looked.

Someone had been there minutes earlier.

Then the vault door slammed.

The lights went out.

Emily screamed.

Emergency lights activated.

A voice came through hidden speakers.

Old.

Calm.

Male.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Margaret collapsed against the shelf.

“Arthur.”

Daniel stared into the darkness.

The voice continued.

“I've waited thirty-nine years for this conversation.”

Daniel shouted.

“Come out!”

Arthur laughed.

“Your father said the same thing.”

Daniel froze.

“Thomas is here?”

Silence.

Then a light turned on behind a glass wall they had not noticed.

A chair stood in the room beyond it.

Someone was tied to it.

Thomas Hayes.

Blood covered his shirt.

Laura gasped.

Daniel ran toward the glass.

“Dad!”

Thomas lifted his head.

Alive.

Barely.

May you like

Arthur's voice returned.

“Now we can finally decide which father you want to believe.”
