Chapter 14 - The Choice Eleanor Designed

The armed men reached the lower corridor.

Cross and the remaining security officer held them back while bullets struck the steel walls.

Evelyn stood before Door 6.

Choose the surviving brother.

“No,” she said.

Marcus examined the panel.

“It may not mean physically surviving.”

“What else could it mean?”

“Control of the archive.”

Charles looked toward the name Adrian Vale.

“Julian built this sequence.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “Eleanor did.”

Julian’s voice returned through the speaker.

“She always believed one of us would become dangerous.”

“Which one?” Charles asked.

“Both.”

Noah pulled the Noah Protocol file from Door 4.

Inside were genetic charts, fertility records, and a signed consent form.

Charles read the signature.

His own.

“I never signed this.”

The form authorized experimental genetic repair during fertility treatment.

The procedure used donor cellular material.

Donor identification: A-1.

Adrian.

Charles looked toward the screen.

“Noah carries your genetic material.”

“A small sequence,” Julian said. “Enough to stabilize the archive marker.”

“Then the secondary paternal sequence is yours.”

“Yes.”

Noah looked between them.

“So both of you are part of me.”

Charles’s face twisted.

“You are not his father.”

“I did not claim to be.”

“You said he was stolen from you.”

“He was. They used my body without consent. They used yours with forged consent. They used Amelia’s fear.”

Evelyn turned toward the choice panel.

Eleanor had built the system around two brothers whose identities had been violated.

Choosing one might destroy the other’s access.

Or destroy the man himself.

“What happens when I choose?” she asked.

Julian’s expression became unreadable.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I never reached Door 6. I had no guardian.”

Gunfire stopped suddenly.

The silence was worse.

Cross moved away from the stairwell.

“They pulled back.”

“Why?” Charles asked.

A low mechanical sound came from above.

Marcus understood first.

“They’re sealing us in.”

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The attackers were preparing to collapse the entrance.

Noah studied the panel.

“What did Eleanor mean by surviving brother?”

Evelyn looked at the photographs, the false records, and the histories imposed on both men.

Perhaps the test was not about blood.

Perhaps it was about identity.

Charles had survived as a Blackwood.

Adrian had survived by becoming Julian Hart.

Both names were constructions.

Evelyn pressed neither option.

Instead, she spoke.

“Neither brother survives if Eleanor chooses who they are.”

The panel flashed red.

Incorrect.

The ceiling shook.

Marcus shouted from Door 5.

“Eight minutes remaining!”

Noah touched Evelyn’s arm.

“The machine accepted answers based on the first crime. Maybe this isn’t asking who should live.”

“What is it asking?”

“Who already survived.”

Evelyn looked at Charles.

He had survived the family by remaining inside it.

She looked at Julian.

He had survived by escaping his name.

Which survival did Eleanor value?

A childhood memory returned.

Eleanor kneeling before Adrian in the green room.

Her voice was stern.

One day, your brother will be given everything.

Adrian asked, And me?

Eleanor answered, You will be given the truth.

Evelyn faced the panel.

“Adrian Vale.”

Charles did not react.

He understood that this was not a sentence of death.

She pressed Adrian’s name.

Door 6 opened.

Charles’s name disappeared.

Julian gasped on the screen.

Behind him, alarms began sounding in the new facility.

“What did you do?” Victoria cried.

Julian staggered, pressing a hand to his temple.

Images flashed across every screen.

Children.

Laboratories.

Names.

Memories.

Julian screamed.

Evelyn stepped toward the speaker.

“Adrian!”

He looked at her.

For a moment, his face became that of the boy in her memory.

“Evie,” he whispered.

Then the connection failed.

Door 6 contained a single chair surrounded by recording equipment.

A label read MEMORY EXTRACTION.

Marcus examined the controls.

“Eleanor designed a way to remove the archive from Adrian.”

“Can it help him?” Evelyn asked.

“Only if he is here.”

The countdown reached five minutes.

Door 7 requested final authorization.

Heir and guardian must enter together.

Noah and Evelyn placed their hands on the panel.

The final door opened.

Beyond it, a freight tunnel descended into darkness.

They carried the wounded officer inside.

Cross covered the rear.

Charles stopped beside Door 6.

“The equipment.”

“What about it?” Evelyn asked.

“If Julian reaches Armitage, it may save him.”

Marcus looked at the collapsing ceiling.

“We cannot move it.”

Charles removed the data core.

“We can take this.”

They entered the tunnel as the upper chamber exploded.

Stone crashed behind them.

The blast threw Evelyn forward.

Emergency lights guided them down the passage.

At the far end, they found a railway platform built beneath the mountain.

A modern electric train waited on the tracks.

Its doors opened automatically.

Noah looked at the display above the platform.

Destination: Site Seven.

Marcus examined the controls.

“This train was activated by the archive transfer.”

Charles looked back toward the destroyed chamber.

“Where is Site Seven?”

Evelyn saw the answer on the route map.

A line crossed the border, continued beneath the sea, and ended at an unidentified coastal location in France.

Before they boarded, Cross noticed another light moving in the tunnel behind them.

Someone else had escaped the collapse.

A figure emerged through the dust.

Victoria.

Her silver gown was torn. Blood covered one arm. The ropes that had bound her wrists hung loose.

She raised a pistol.

“Give me Noah,” she said.

Charles stepped in front of him.

Victoria smiled.

“You still don’t know what happens when he reaches thirteen.”

“What happens?” Noah asked.

Victoria looked directly at him.

May you like

“You remember the person who created you.”

Then she fired.
