THE HEIR IN THE FIRE / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Seven Doors

The first bullets struck the stone entrance less than a minute later.

Charles ordered Noah behind the central chair while the security officers secured the stairwell.

Lena Cross retrieved a weapon from one of them.

“You’re no longer a detective,” Charles said.

“I’m still accurate.”

Marcus searched the modern equipment inside Door 1.

“There’s another exit.”

“Where?” Evelyn asked.

“The system map shows a freight tunnel beneath Door 7.”

“Can we open it?”

“Not without completing the sequence.”

The seven numbered doors surrounded the chamber.

Door 1 had opened for Noah’s key and Evelyn’s palm.

Door 2 showed two empty slots.

Marcus found metal plates inside the first room.

One was engraved HEIR.

The other GUARDIAN.

Noah and Evelyn inserted them.

Door 2 opened.

Inside stood a row of glass cylinders containing old documents preserved in nitrogen.

Evelyn removed the first.

It contained a list of children transferred from Armitage House.

Most names were unfamiliar.

One was Evelyn Vale.

Another was Adrian Vale.

A third was Charles Blackwood.

Charles stared at it.

“I was never here.”

Julian’s voice came through the laptop speaker.

“You were the first successful infant subject.”

Charles turned toward the screen.

“What did they do to me?”

“Your father volunteered you.”

“No.”

“Robert wanted an heir who could carry information without understanding it.”

Noah looked at Charles.

“The archive came through you.”

Julian nodded.

“Noah inherited the pattern.”

Gunfire continued upstairs.

A security officer shouted that the main entrance would not hold.

Door 3 required a spoken phrase.

The machine prompted:

State the first crime.

No one knew the answer.

Marcus searched Eleanor’s files.

Cross examined the child-transfer list.

Charles stood frozen beside his own name.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

A memory rose.

Children in white uniforms.

A doctor asking questions.

A boy beside her whispering the same sentence every night.

They took the children before they took the money.

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“The first crime was not theft.”

She faced the door.

“They took the children.”

The lock released.

Door 3 opened.

Inside was a wall of photographs.

Hundreds of children stared back.

Some wore hospital clothes.

Others were pictured in wealthy homes years later under different names.

Cross found her father in one image.

He stood beside Margaret Vale and a young Eleanor.

“They were trying to move the children out,” she said.

Marcus pointed toward another photograph.

Robert Blackwood was handing an envelope to Victoria’s father, Alexander Crane.

On the back was a date from fifteen years earlier.

Victoria had lied.

Her father was not merely an investor.

He had helped control Armitage.

Door 4 required blood.

A needle extended from the panel.

“Heir blood,” the machine announced.

Charles stepped forward.

“No.”

Noah looked at him.

“We don’t have time.”

“You don’t know what it will do.”

“I know what the people upstairs will do.”

Noah placed his finger against the needle.

A drop of blood entered the scanner.

The machine processed it.

“Heir confirmed,” it said.

Then another message followed.

“Paternal origin confirmed: Charles Edward Blackwood.”

Charles closed his eyes.

The false birth certificate was finally disproven.

Noah looked at him.

For the first time since the fire, he seemed relieved.

Charles pulled him into an embrace.

“You are my son.”

Noah held him tightly.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

The machine continued.

“Secondary paternal sequence detected.”

Everyone froze.

“What does that mean?” Charles asked.

Julian answered through the screen.

“Someone altered the embryo before implantation.”

Charles turned toward Evelyn.

“Noah was conceived naturally.”

“Was he?” Marcus asked.

Charles’s expression shifted.

Amelia had undergone fertility treatment after two miscarriages.

He had forgotten the details.

Or believed he had.

Door 4 opened.

Inside was a medical laboratory.

A file on the central table read NOAH PROTOCOL.

Before they could open it, an explosion shook the upper floor.

One of the security officers fell back into the chamber, blood spreading across his shoulder.

“They’re inside.”

Cross fired up the staircase.

Marcus dragged the officer behind the steel wall.

Door 5 required a memory sequence.

The machine played seven tones.

Noah covered his ears.

“I know that sound.”

“From where?” Evelyn asked.

“My dreams.”

He repeated the tones in reverse order.

Door 5 opened.

Inside was a communication room connected to hidden servers around the world.

Screens illuminated one by one.

Bank records.

Government correspondence.

Medical databases.

Blackwood Industries contracts.

The archive was real.

And it was still active.

A message appeared across every screen.

TRANSFER INITIATED.

Marcus moved to the keyboard.

“What transfer?”

Figures began scrolling.

Billions of dollars moved from dormant trusts into new accounts.

Charles stared.

“Can you stop it?”

“I don’t know.”

The recipient account appeared.

Beneficiary: Evelyn Vale.

Everyone looked at her.

“I didn’t do this.”

Julian’s face disappeared from the laptop feed.

Victoria remained tied to the chair.

She smiled.

“That is why they needed the guardian alive.”

The screens changed again.

A countdown began.

Thirteen minutes.

Door 6 remained closed.

Its panel displayed a new instruction.

Choose the surviving brother.

Below it were two names.
