Chapter 10 - The Detective Who Lost a Child

Everyone looked at Lena Cross.
She did not deny the image.
“I was there,” she said.
Charles moved toward her.
“You knew?”
“I knew a baby was removed from the clinic that night.”
“My baby?”
“I did not know the child was Noah.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Cross removed her weapon and placed it on the table.
Then she set down her badge.
“My father was Chief Inspector Daniel Cross. His name was in Eleanor’s file.”
“The police already lost one child,” Evelyn said.
Cross nodded.
“My father handled Adrian’s disappearance.”
Marcus stared at her.
“Handled it or arranged it?”
“I spent twenty years trying to answer that question.”
She looked at Noah.
“On the night you were born, I was a junior officer. My father called and ordered me to meet him at Saint Matthew’s Clinic. When I arrived, a man was carrying a newborn through a service corridor.”
“Julian,” Evelyn said.
“I tried to stop him. He said the baby was in danger and that the police were part of it. Then my father appeared and told me to let him leave.”
Charles’s voice shook.
“And you obeyed.”
“Yes.”
Noah looked at her.
“Where did he take me?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were returned,” Charles said.
Cross nodded.
“Forty minutes later, the baby was back in the nursery. The records had been changed. My father told me I had seen nothing.”
“Why didn’t you investigate?”
“I did. Quietly.”
“And?”
“My father died two months later.”
“How?”
“Suicide.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“That usually means murder in this family.”
Cross ignored him.
“Before his death, he left me one sentence: The child came back, but the name did not.”
Evelyn looked at Noah.
“What did that mean?”
“I assumed the wrong child had been returned.”
Charles’s face went white.
“No.”
Cross turned to him.
“I never found proof.”
“You should have told me.”
“I approached Amelia six years ago.”
Charles stared at her.
“She knew you?”
“She asked me to meet her near the north coast. She said she had uncovered the clinic files.”
“The night she died.”
“Yes.”
“You were the last person to see her alive.”
“No. When I reached the meeting point, her car was already burning.”
“But her body was not inside.”
“I did not know that until today.”
Charles picked up Cross’s badge.
“You investigated my family for years and then assigned yourself to the fire.”
“I did not assign myself. Your estate lies in my jurisdiction.”
“You should be removed from the case.”
“I agree.”
That surprised everyone.
Cross took a sealed envelope from her coat.
“I requested an independent team before returning here. They will arrive within the hour.”
Evelyn watched her.
“Why tell us now?”
“Because the person who abducted Noah knew how to bypass police security. Someone still has access to my father’s network.”
Marcus leaned against the wall.
“Or you do.”
Cross accepted the accusation without reacting.
Noah looked toward the photograph of Julian Hart.
“Why did he take me?”
Cross looked at Evelyn.
“Perhaps he believed you belonged to him.”
“He told Amelia the boy was stolen from him,” Evelyn said.
Charles stood beside Noah.
“He is not going near my son.”
Marcus folded his arms.
“You may not have a choice.”
“What does that mean?”
“The hidden inheritance activates at thirteen. Everyone hunting Noah needs him alive or dead for different reasons.”
“Victoria tried to kill him.”
“Victoria believes Adrian inherits if Noah dies. But Julian may believe Noah’s identity unlocks something else.”
Evelyn returned to the Fire Condition file.
A page near the back contained a diagram of seven trusts connected through shell companies, private foundations, and foreign banks.
At the center was the thorned crown symbol.
Beneath it were two lines.
The heir opens the first gate.
The guardian opens the seventh.
Evelyn touched the second line.
“I’m the guardian.”
Noah looked at her.
“Then what am I?”
“The heir,” Marcus said.
Charles shook his head.
“To money?”
“No,” Marcus replied. “The visible assets are a distraction.”
He pointed to the word gate.
“Eleanor wasn’t protecting wealth. She was protecting access.”
“To what?” Charles asked.
Marcus took the reel of film from his coat.
“The answer may be on this.”
They found a projector in the hospital media room.
The film showed a stone facility beneath a snowy mountain.
Children were led through a steel door.
Each wore a white uniform marked with a number.
One child turned toward the camera.
A dark-haired boy.
Adrian.
Beside him walked a girl in a green coat.
Evelyn.
The final frame showed the thorned crown carved above the entrance.
A location was written beneath it.
Armitage House, Northumberland.
Closed by order of the Crown, 1998.
Noah pointed to a figure standing at the edge of the image.
“Who is that?”
The figure wore a white medical coat.
Charles stepped closer.
The face was partially shadowed, but unmistakable.
May you like
It was Eleanor Blackwood.
The woman who claimed to have protected the children had delivered them to Armitage House herself.
