Chapter 9 - The Life Mark Could Not Get Back

Mark saw Clara once more before the divorce became final.

The meeting took place in a private conference room at Dana’s office.

Clara was eight months pregnant.

Thomas offered to accompany her, but she declined.

“I need to finish this as myself,” she told him.

Mark entered wearing a plain gray suit. Without the expensive watch, confident posture, and carefully styled public image, he seemed smaller.

He stared at Clara’s stomach.

“How is the baby?”

“Healthy.”

“Do you know if it is a boy or a girl?”

“A girl.”

Mark closed his eyes.

Clara had known for months.

She had once planned to tell him after the gala.

“What are you naming her?”

“That is not something I am discussing today.”

He nodded, looking down at the table.

“I am sorry.”

Clara waited.

Mark struggled to continue.

“I was selfish. Evelyn made me feel like I was finally becoming the person I was supposed to be.”

“No one made you push me.”

“I know.”

“No one made you steal.”

“I know.”

“No one made you humiliate me.”

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“When did you stop loving me?”

Clara considered the question.

“When I realized you only regretted hurting me after you discovered who my father was.”

“That is not true.”

“Your first message from outside the hospital did not ask whether the baby was safe. You asked why I had hidden my identity.”

Mark’s face tightened.

“I was in shock.”

“You were calculating what my identity meant for you.”

He had no answer.

Clara placed the signed divorce documents on the table.

“I loved the person you pretended to be. I spent years waiting for him to return. Now I understand that kindness was easy for you when it cost nothing.”

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“Can I ever see my daughter?”

“That will be determined through the court, based on her safety and well-being. Not your wishes. Not mine. Hers.”

“I would never hurt her.”

“You pushed her mother while she was inside me.”

The words struck harder than anger would have.

Mark looked away.

Clara stood carefully.

“I do not want revenge. I want peace. You are no longer part of the life I am building.”

As she reached the door, Mark spoke again.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?”

“Yes.”

He looked up.

“When?”

“After the baby was born. My father wanted to create an education fund for her, and I knew the truth could not remain private forever.”

Mark seemed unable to breathe.

He had been only weeks away from learning everything.

Not because Clara intended to use her father’s influence for him, but because she trusted him enough to bring him fully into her family.

He had destroyed that future for a woman who abandoned him as soon as the investigation began.

Clara opened the door.

“Goodbye, Mark.”

This time, she did not look back.

Three weeks later, Clara gave birth to a healthy daughter.

She named her Grace Eleanor Sterling-Reed.

Grace for the strength to begin again.

Eleanor for Clara’s mother.

Sterling-Reed because Clara no longer believed she had to choose between the family she came from and the identity she had built.

Thomas held his granddaughter and cried without embarrassment.

“She has your eyes,” he said.

“She has your stubbornness.”

“That is a valuable inheritance.”

May you like

Clara smiled.

For the first time in years, the future did not frighten her.
