Chapter 5 - What Happened Before the Ballroom Doors Opened

The night of the gala, Mark barely looked at Clara.
She wore a dark green maternity gown and her mother’s pearl earrings. The dress was elegant, but Mark criticized it before they left home.
“Evelyn will be wearing a custom Voss design.”
“I am not competing with Evelyn.”
“That is obvious.”
Clara studied his reflection in the mirror.
“Is there something you want to tell me before we go?”
“No.”
“Are you in love with her?”
Mark adjusted his cuff links.
“This is not the time.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only one you are getting.”
At the ballroom, Mark immediately left Clara near the entrance and joined Evelyn beside the donor reception area.
Evelyn wore a silver dress and the satisfied expression of someone who believed the evening already belonged to her.
For nearly an hour, Clara watched them move through the room together.
Mark introduced Evelyn to everyone.
He never introduced Clara.
When guests asked who she was, he called her “a family friend” twice and “one of our compliance consultants” once.
Clara felt something inside her marriage quietly die.
She did not cause a scene.
She did not confront them publicly.
Instead, she went to the private office near the ballroom to confirm whether the final transfer had been authorized.
Through the partially open door, she heard Mark and Evelyn speaking in the corridor.
“After tonight, the money clears,” Mark said.
“And then?” Evelyn asked.
“I leave her.”
“What about the baby?”
Mark hesitated.
Clara held her breath.
“I will provide whatever the court requires.”
Evelyn laughed softly.
“That sounds expensive.”
“Not compared to what we are building.”
Clara stepped into the corridor.
Mark’s face changed when he saw her.
Evelyn merely smiled.
“How much did you hear?” Mark asked.
“Enough.”
“Clara, go back to the ballroom.”
“You are stealing from the charity.”
Evelyn’s smile vanished.
Mark looked toward the office door.
“You have no idea what you are talking about.”
“I found the consulting transfers. Three shell companies. One address. Money routed into your private firm.”
Mark moved closer.
“Lower your voice.”
“Did you think nobody would examine the records?”
“You accessed confidential files.”
“I was assigned to review them.”
Evelyn folded her arms.
“This is becoming tiresome.”
Clara turned to her.
“You are both being reported.”
Mark gripped Clara’s elbow.
“You will not destroy everything I have built.”
She pulled away.
“You built it with stolen money.”
They returned to the ballroom through the side entrance, each trying to keep the confrontation quiet.
Evelyn noticed several donors nearby and immediately changed her strategy.
She picked up a glass of red wine.
Then, as Clara stepped closer, Evelyn poured it down the front of her own silver dress and screamed.
“She attacked me!”
Mark reacted instantly.
He stepped between them and shoved Clara away.
He used enough force to send her into the banquet table.
The crash brought the entire ballroom to silence.
Mark looked down at his pregnant wife.
There was one final moment in which he could have chosen decency.
He could have helped her.
He could have called for a doctor.
He could have admitted what he had done.

Instead, he looked at the powerful woman behind him and said, “Stop embarrassing me.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
