The Governor Walked Past Him / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Invitation Mark Did Not Understand

Clara did not confront Mark immediately.

She wanted certainty.

Over the next two weeks, she examined invoices, bank records, vendor registrations, and internal emails. She documented every suspicious transaction and identified signatures authorizing the payments.

Mark had approved several.

Evelyn had approved all of them.

Clara contacted the charity’s independent legal auditor without revealing her relationship to Mark. She asked general questions about reporting procedures and evidence preservation.

Then she placed copies of everything inside a blue folder and stored it in a secure box.

Meanwhile, Mark became increasingly excited about the gala.

“Governor Sterling is attending,” he announced one evening.

Clara looked up from her laptop.

“Are you sure?”

“His office confirmed it this morning. Evelyn says she can introduce me.”

Clara remained silent.

Her father had not mentioned the gala.

Mark mistook her silence for indifference.

“Do you understand what this could mean for me? His administration is preparing a major redevelopment program. If I make the right impression, this company could become one of the approved partners.”

“Is your company qualified?”

Mark frowned.

“That is not the point.”

“It should be the first point.”

“You never support me.”

“I supported you when you had nothing except a plan. I supported you when we lived in a one-bedroom apartment. I supported you while you worked weekends and changed careers. But supporting you does not mean agreeing with everything you do.”

Mark closed his laptop with unnecessary force.

“Evelyn understands ambition.”

“Evelyn understands leverage.”

Mark stood.

“You will attend the gala, and you will behave appropriately.”

Clara stared at him.

“I will behave appropriately?”

“No accusations. No jealousy. No scenes.”

“I have never caused a scene in my life.”

“Then keep it that way.”

After he left the room, Clara called Thomas.

Her father answered from the back seat of a state vehicle.

“You sound worried,” he said.

“Are you attending the Voss charity gala?”

“Yes. I was told you might be there.”

“Who told you?”

“Your security contact noticed your name on the guest list.”

Clara closed her eyes.

She had forgotten that Thomas’s team still monitored major events she attended.

“Dad, something is wrong with the charity’s finances.”

Thomas’s tone changed.

“How wrong?”

“I cannot discuss all of it yet. I have to follow reporting procedures. But I think money has been diverted through shell companies.”

“Is Mark involved?”

Clara did not answer.

Her silence gave him the answer.

Thomas exhaled slowly.

“Come home.”

“I need to finish this.”

“You are pregnant.”

“And capable.”

“I did not say you were incapable. I said you do not have to stand beside a man who may be committing crimes.”

“I need to know the truth before I destroy my marriage.”

“Clara, if the truth destroys your marriage, the truth is not responsible.”

She pressed one hand against her stomach as the baby moved.

“I am going to the gala.”

“Then I will be there.”

“Not as my father.”

Thomas was silent.

“You still want to protect him from knowing?”

“I want to see what he does when he thinks I have no one powerful behind me.”

Thomas did not like the decision.

But he understood why she needed the answer.

“Your security contact will remain near you.”

“No visible agents.”

“Clara.”

“Please.”

May you like

After a long pause, he agreed.

Neither of them knew how cruel the answer would be.
