Chapter 11 - The Father Who Came Back From the Dead)

Thomas looked older than Ethan remembered.
Much older.
His hair had gone almost entirely gray.
A scar ran from his right temple toward his ear.
But it was him.
Same posture.
Same eyes.
Same way of pressing his lips together when afraid.
Ethan felt rage before relief.
“You’re alive.”
Thomas whispered, “Ethan.”
Samuel raised the gun.
“Family reunions later.”
Olivia moved closer to Ethan.
Samuel noticed.
“Stay where you are.”
Thomas looked at his brother.
“It’s over, Sam.”
Samuel laughed weakly.
“People have been telling me that for thirty years.”
Police voices echoed outside.
Samuel’s expression changed.
“You brought them.”
Ethan said, “Of course I did.”
Samuel pointed the gun toward Olivia.
“You shouldn’t have.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
Samuel’s hand trembled.
Cancer had reduced him physically, but something hard remained in his eyes.
“You always did choose strangers over blood.”
Thomas stared at him.
“Olivia is not a stranger.”
Samuel smiled.
“No. She became the daughter you wished you had.”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
She stared at Thomas.
There was history there.
Years of secrets Ethan had never seen.
Samuel backed toward the vault.
“Open the lower safe.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
“You came all this way.”
“I came because you said you had Thomas.”
“And I did.”
“You said you’d release him.”
Samuel laughed.
“You believed me?”
“No.”
Olivia’s eyes hardened.
“I needed you to bring him here.”
Samuel stopped smiling.
Ethan understood.
This had been Olivia’s plan.
Not escape.
Confrontation.
She had allowed Samuel to move her because Blackridge was the one place where proof existed.
Samuel looked toward Thomas.
“You knew?”
Thomas said nothing.
Samuel’s face twisted.
“You both played me.”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“Behind the blue cabinet.”
Ethan moved.
Samuel swung the gun toward him.
Reed fired from the corridor.
The shot struck Samuel’s arm.
The pistol fell.
Officers rushed in.
Samuel collapsed.
Thomas kicked the weapon away.
For a few seconds, chaos filled the vault.
Commands.
Handcuffs.
Medical personnel.
Then silence.
Ethan stood across from his father.
Thomas opened his arms slightly.
Ethan did not move.
“You let us bury you.”
Thomas lowered his arms.
“Yes.”
“You let Mom mourn you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lucy.”
“Yes.”
Every answer cut.
“You knew where Olivia was.”
“For part of the time.”
“And you never told me.”
“I couldn’t.”
“You chose not to.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Ethan wanted to hit him.
Instead he turned toward Olivia.
She was crying silently.
He walked closer.
“You’re alive.”
“So are you.”
A laugh escaped him.
Then both of them were crying.
Ethan didn’t touch her.
Not yet.
Twelve years was too much distance to cross in one gesture.
“Lucy is safe.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
“She stopped my wedding.”
A tiny smile appeared.
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“Nora told me her plan.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You people need to stop planning my life.”
Olivia laughed through tears.
That sound broke something open inside him.
He hugged her.
For a moment, twelve years disappeared.
Then returned all at once.
Olivia pulled away.
“I’m sorry.”
“So am I.”
“You don’t know what for yet.”
“Probably several things.”
Despite everything, she smiled.
Reed approached.
“We need to clear the building.”
Olivia pointed toward the blue cabinet.
“Not yet.”
Behind it was a small mechanical panel.
She entered a code.
The floor beneath the cabinet unlocked.
A steel drawer rose from below.
Inside were company records dating back thirty years.
Northstar Meridian.
Bank accounts.
Property transfers.
Photographs.
Recorded meetings.
Enough evidence to destroy reputations across several states.
Reed stared.
“Why did Samuel need you to open it?”
“Thomas changed the code.”
Ethan looked at his father.
Thomas said, “Only Olivia and I knew it.”
Samuel was carried out on a stretcher under guard.
As he passed Ethan, he smiled.
“You think this ends because I’m dying?”
Ethan stared at him.
Samuel continued.
“You have no idea who kept Northstar alive while I was sick.”
Reed leaned closer.
“Save it for questioning.”
Samuel laughed.
Then looked at Thomas.
“Tell him.”
Thomas’s face went pale.
“Tell me what?” Ethan asked.
Samuel’s smile widened.
“Ask your father who signed the first Northstar contract.”
Thomas remained silent.
Samuel was carried outside.
Ethan faced his father.
“Who?”
Thomas looked at Olivia.
She shook her head.
“Not now.”
Ethan turned toward her.
“You know too?”
“Yes.”
“What is everyone protecting me from?”
Olivia’s expression softened.
“Not you.”
“Then who?”
May you like
She looked toward the doorway.
“Lucy.”
