Chapter 1 - The Name Ethan Had Buried)

Twelve years earlier, Ethan Pierce had believed Olivia Bennett had broken his heart.

By sunset on his wedding day, he no longer knew whether anything he remembered about their separation had been true.

The police arrived twenty minutes after Victoria disappeared from the church.

Lucy refused to leave Ethan’s side.

She sat beneath a wool coat someone had brought from the rectory while Detective Marcus Reed questioned guests.

Ethan stood near the altar with his bow tie hanging loose around his neck.

The wedding flowers looked absurd now.

White roses.

Candles.

Gold ribbons.

Everything arranged for a future that had ended before it began.

Detective Reed held one of Olivia’s letters inside a clear evidence sleeve.

“You’re certain you never received any of these?”

“Certain.”

“How long were you and Olivia Bennett together?”

“Almost four years.”

“Why did it end?”

Ethan hesitated.

That question had once had a simple answer.

Olivia left.

Except now he remembered details he had spent years refusing to examine.

The last month of their relationship had been strange.

Olivia had become nervous.

She had started checking the street before leaving restaurants.

Twice she had asked Ethan whether anyone at Pierce Meridian had connections to the Hale family.

At the time, Ethan had barely known Victoria.

Their families moved in some of the same business circles, but nothing more.

Then Olivia disappeared.

Her apartment was emptied.

Her phone disconnected.

A lawyer delivered a letter saying she wanted no further contact.

Ethan had called.

Written.

Searched.

Eventually, humiliation had turned into anger.

He had forced himself to stop.

“She sent me a letter,” Ethan said.

Reed looked up.

“What did it say?”

“That she had met someone else. That she was leaving Boston. That she never wanted to see me again.”

Lucy was listening from several feet away.

“My mom never met anyone else.”

Ethan turned.

The child’s voice was small but certain.

“She said you were the only man she ever loved.”

Something tightened painfully in Ethan’s chest.

Detective Reed crouched beside Lucy.

“Do you know why your mother left Boston?”

Lucy shook her head.

“She never told me everything.”

“Did she ever talk about Mr. Pierce?”

“Only sometimes.”

Lucy looked at Ethan.

“She kept a picture.”

“The one from the envelope?” Ethan asked.

Lucy shook her head.

“A different one.”

“What picture?”

“You were sleeping.”

Ethan almost smiled despite himself.

Lucy continued.

“You were on a couch and Mom had drawn a mustache on you.”

He remembered.

The memory came with brutal clarity.

Olivia laughing while he chased her through their apartment.

He had forgotten that photograph existed.

Ethan looked away.

Detective Reed noticed but said nothing.

“What happened three days ago?” he asked Lucy.

Lucy pulled the coat tighter around herself.

“Mom came home early.”

“From where?”

“Work.”

“What does she do?”

“She helps people with money problems. Taxes and stuff.”

An accountant, Ethan thought.

Olivia had always been brilliant with numbers.

“She looked scared,” Lucy continued. “She packed a backpack. Then she took that envelope from a place under the kitchen floor.”

Ethan and Reed exchanged looks.

“She told me I might have to stay with Mrs. Alvarez next door. Then a car came.”

“What kind?”

“Black.”

“Who was inside?”

“I couldn’t see.”

“Did your mother leave willingly?”

Lucy hesitated.

“She went outside because someone called her.”

“What did they say?”

“I don’t know. But she told me to lock the door.”

Lucy’s voice became softer.

“She never came back.”

“Why didn’t you call police?”

“I did.”

Reed straightened.

“You did?”

“Yesterday.”

“And?”

“They said adults can leave if they want.”

Reed’s jaw tightened.

“Did anyone come to your home?”

“One officer.”

“Name?”

“I don’t remember.”

Ethan walked closer.

“How did you know where I was getting married?”

Lucy reached into the pocket of her wet hoodie.

She produced a folded newspaper clipping.

A society announcement.

ETHAN PIERCE TO WED VICTORIA HALE AT ST. MATTHEW’S.

The edges had been circled in blue ink.

Olivia’s handwriting.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

“She knew.”

Lucy nodded.

“She kept watching you.”

“Why?”

“I think she wanted to tell you something.”

Ethan looked at the child again.

Eleven.

Olivia disappeared from him twelve years earlier.

The math was impossible to ignore.

Reed saw his expression.

“We’ll deal with that later.”

Ethan barely heard him.

The church doors opened.

His younger sister, Claire, hurried inside carrying dry clothes for Lucy.

Behind her walked Ethan’s mother, Margaret Pierce.

Margaret stopped when she saw the letters.

Her face changed.

Ethan noticed.

“Mom?”

Margaret looked at Olivia’s name on the nearest envelope.

Then at Lucy.

Her hand moved to her mouth.

“No.”

Ethan took a step toward her.

“What?”

Margaret seemed unable to breathe.

“Where did you get those?”

“They belonged to Olivia.”

Margaret stared at him.

And Ethan saw guilt.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Guilt.

“Mom.”

She closed her eyes.

“Ethan, there is something I should have told you years ago.”

Lucy looked between them.

Detective Reed became very still.

Margaret whispered, “Olivia came to see me before she disappeared.”

Ethan felt the floor drop beneath him.

“What did you say?”

“She was pregnant.”

Silence returned to the church.

Ethan looked at Lucy.

May you like

Margaret began crying.

“She told me the baby was yours.”
