Chapter 9 - the man who betrayed them twice)

They found Marcus before dawn.

Not because they searched for him.

Because Marcus found them.

He was waiting beside Naomi's car in an underground parking garage.

His suit was torn.

Blood had dried along his forehead.

Naomi pulled a small can of pepper spray.

"Don't move."

Marcus raised both hands.

"If I wanted Evan returned to Richard, there would already be six men here."

Evan stayed inside the car.

"What happened in Boston?"

Marcus looked at Naomi.

"Richard called you."

"Answer me."

Marcus approached slowly.

"I found Claire."

Evan's chest tightened.

"Did you kill her?"

"No."

"Did you hurt her?"

"No."

"Then what happened?"

Marcus looked exhausted.

"I helped her disappear."

No one spoke.

Marcus leaned against the car.

"After the crash, Richard believed Claire had died. When no body was found, he became obsessed."

"You knew she was alive?"

"Not immediately."

"When?"

"Five months later."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she begged me not to."

Evan laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."

"We were."

"No. You were making decisions for me."

Marcus absorbed the words.

"You're right."

That surprised Evan.

Marcus continued.

"Claire contacted me because she needed medical records from Lantern. I met her in Boston. Richard had people following me."

"So you led them to her."

"Yes."

"Then what?"

"We escaped through a hospital service corridor. I put her on a freight train heading north."

"Where?"

"Vermont."

"Then?"

"She vanished."

Evan watched him.

"You expect me to believe you haven't seen her in two years?"

"Three."

"Three?"

Marcus nodded.

"Boston was the last time."

Naomi lowered the spray slightly.

"Richard made it sound like you killed her."

"He wants Evan to distrust everyone except him."

"You're easy to distrust."

Marcus looked at Evan.

"I deserve that."

Nia stepped forward.

"What is Project Lantern really for?"

Marcus hesitated.

Evan said, "We saw the files."

The doctor closed his eyes.

"Then you know about the children."

"We know you signed it."

"I signed the original protocol."

"Convenient."

"The original study helped children recovering from severe nerve trauma. Eleanor designed the monitoring system. I supervised clinical treatment."

"When did my father change it?"

"After the first year."

Marcus looked sick.

"He discovered insurance companies and donors responded more aggressively to dramatic cases. He began creating the symptoms we were supposed to treat."

Nia whispered, "He made children sick so he could pretend to cure them."

Marcus nodded.

"And sometimes he did cure them."

Evan stared.

"What?"

"After enough media attention and donations, Richard would stop the compounds. The child's condition improved. Whitmore doctors called it a breakthrough."

Evan understood the horror.

"He created miracles."

"Yes."

"Fake miracles."

"Real recovery from artificial illness."

Naomi cursed quietly.

Evan looked down at his legs.

"Why didn't he cure me?"

Marcus took too long to answer.

"Because your case became too valuable."

Evan felt tears rise.

Marcus continued.

"After Claire disappeared, Richard built the foundation's entire public identity around you."

"The brave son."

"Yes."

"The grieving father."

"Yes."

"The miracle that never happens."

Marcus nodded.

Evan turned away.

Then Nia asked, "Can he walk?"

Marcus looked at her.

"With rehabilitation."

"How long?"

"I can't promise."

"Can he stand?"

Marcus looked at Evan.

"Possibly."

Evan's heart raced.

"Now?"

"Your medication needs time to clear."

"How long?"

"Hours to days for enough improvement to measure safely."

Evan gripped the wheelchair.

"I want to try."

"Not here."

"I want to try."

Marcus crouched.

"Evan, you've been immobilized for years. Your muscles are weak. If you force it, you'll fall."

"Then I fall."

"That isn't the point."

"It is to me."

Marcus stared at him.

Then nodded.

"Not yet. But soon."

A car engine echoed through the garage.

Marcus looked behind him.

"Richard's people."

Naomi unlocked the doors.

"Get in."

Marcus hesitated.

Nia said, "You wanted trust. Start with surviving."

He got inside.

They drove away seconds before two black SUVs entered the garage.

As they emerged onto Lexington Avenue, Marcus looked at Evan's wheelchair.

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"Richard has a kill switch."

Evan frowned.

"For the chair?"

"For the evidence inside it."

"The metal box?"

"No."

Marcus pointed beneath the joystick.

"There's a second storage system."

Evan looked at the blinking lights.

"What does it contain?"

"Three years of recordings."

Evan's mouth went dry.

"Of what?"

May you like

Marcus answered.

"Everything Richard said when he thought you weren't listening."
