Chapter 11 - come with me)

They returned to the Whitmore estate shortly after noon the next day.

Not secretly.

Maya contacted three television networks.

The federal prosecutor arranged for two investigators to remain nearby, but without authenticated evidence they could not yet arrest Richard.

That would change.

If the plan worked.

Maya entered through the front with invited press.

Mrs. Dawson used her employee access.

Naomi stayed outside with backup copies.

Marcus entered through the old greenhouse tunnel.

Nia and Evan waited in the service corridor.

The gala had been extended.

Richard had transformed his son's disappearance into an emergency fundraising event.

More cameras.

More sympathy.

More control.

Evan looked at Nia.

"You don't have to do this."

She frowned.

"You think I came this far because I like your house?"

Evan smiled.

"Maybe the chandeliers."

"They're ugly."

"They cost more than most houses."

"Still ugly."

Evan laughed.

It felt strange.

Good.

Marcus approached.

"Your last dose was nearly twenty hours ago."

Evan looked at his legs.

"I can feel my knees."

"That's progress."

"Can I stand?"

"We don't know."

"Great."

Marcus crouched.

"Listen to me. If you can't stand tonight, nothing changes. The evidence is what matters."

Evan nodded.

But inside, it mattered.

More than he wanted to admit.

Nia held out her hands.

"You ready?"

"No."

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Because scared people pay attention."

They entered the ballroom.

Exactly as Nia had promised.

Exactly as Claire had planned years earlier.

The barefoot girl walked toward the boy in the wheelchair while the wealthiest people in New York watched.

Guests recognized Evan.

Gasps spread.

Phones lifted.

Richard turned onstage.

His face changed.

Nia reached Evan.

She took both his hands.

"Come with me."

Evan looked into her eyes.

This was the moment.

The words Claire had given Naomi.

The words Naomi had given Nia.

Nia leaned closer.

"Leave with me, and I'll make you walk."

Richard pushed through the crowd.

"Get away from him. Get inside now."

Nia held Evan tighter.

Richard bent toward her.

"This isn't a joke."

Nia looked directly at him.

"Because your mother asked me to."

The ballroom went silent.

Richard's fear appeared.

Maya's cameras captured it.

Evan finally saw what Claire had wanted him to see.

His father was not invincible.

Richard grabbed Evan's chair.

"We're leaving."

Evan locked the wheels.

"No."

Richard stared at him.

"Evan."

"No."

"You've been manipulated."

"So have you."

"What?"

"By yourself."

Murmurs spread.

Richard forced a smile toward the guests.

"My son is confused."

Evan reached beneath the armrest.

He removed the hidden drive.

"This recorded you."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Everything."

Maya's team connected the ballroom audio system.

Richard turned toward security.

"Shut this down."

But Marcus stepped onto the stage.

"No."

Richard stared.

Marcus activated the first recording.

The ballroom heard Richard's voice.

"His left foot moved."

Then.

"Increase the dose."

Guests turned toward him.

Richard shouted, "Fabricated."

Another recording played.

"The boy is healthy."

"Then change the scan."

Cameras zoomed closer.

Richard pointed at Marcus.

"This man lost his medical license."

Marcus answered, "Because you made sure I did."

Maya projected the Lantern records across the ballroom screens.

Children.

Medical files.

Payments.

Richard's signature.

The crowd erupted.

Richard moved toward the exit.

Two federal investigators entered.

"Mr. Whitmore, remain where you are."

Richard stopped.

Not arrested yet.

But trapped.

Evan watched him.

Then Richard did something unexpected.

He laughed.

"You think this ends with me?"

Everyone quieted.

Richard looked at Evan.

"You have no idea what your mother started."

Evan felt a chill.

"What did she start?"

Richard smiled.

"Ask your little friend who paid her grandmother."

Nia looked at Naomi across the room.

Naomi went pale.

Richard continued.

"You think Claire was saving children?"

May you like

His smile widened.

"She was choosing them."
