Chapter 4 - the woman outside Lila's window)

Police searched the Mercer estate until dawn.

They found footprints near the rear garden.

A section of the perimeter camera system had gone offline for exactly seven minutes.

Nothing had been stolen.

Nobody had entered the house.

If Lila was correct, the woman had only stood outside watching.

Daniel refused to leave his daughter again.

He sat beside her bed while sunrise gradually brightened the curtains.

Eli slept in a nearby guest room with a police officer outside the door.

Claire stayed downstairs.

Lila had spoken more in twelve hours than she had in eleven months.

But every sentence seemed to reveal something worse.

Daniel waited until she was calm.

Then he asked gently.

"The woman you saw outside."

Lila watched him.

"Was it Mommy?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"But she looked like Mommy?"

"Same face."

Daniel frowned.

"Exactly the same?"

Lila considered.

"Older."

"Mara would be older now," he whispered.

Lila shook her head again.

"Not Mommy."

"How do you know?"

"Eyes."

Daniel did not understand.

"What about her eyes?"

Lila touched his face.

"Mommy looked warm."

Daniel felt tears rise.

"And the woman?"

"Cold."

Children often described emotion through strange physical metaphors.

But something in Lila's certainty frightened him.

"Did you see that woman before?"

Lila nodded.

"When?"

"The yellow house."

Daniel's breath caught.

"The safe house?"

She did not know what that meant.

"The house in the picture?"

"Yes."

"Was she inside?"

"No."

"Outside?"

Lila nodded.

"With Uncle Victor?"

Daniel went still.

"Victor was there?"

She nodded again.

Before he could ask more, Lila pulled the blanket over her face.

Enough.

Daniel recognized the boundary.

He kissed her forehead.

Downstairs, Detective Alvarez was waiting.

So was Claire.

Daniel told them everything.

Claire looked pale.

"Someone who looked like Mara?"

"That's what Lila says."

Alvarez opened her notebook.

"Did Mara have a sister?"

Daniel almost answered no.

Then stopped.

"Mara was adopted."

Claire looked at him.

"You never told me that."

"It rarely came up."

Alvarez leaned forward.

"Did she know her biological family?"

"She said she didn't."

"When was she adopted?"

"Infancy."

"Agency?"

"I don't know."

Daniel suddenly realized how little he knew about the earliest part of his wife's life.

Mara hated discussing it.

Whenever Daniel had asked, she smiled and said the people who raised her were her real family.

Her adoptive parents were both dead now.

Alvarez began making calls.

By noon they had obtained Mara's original adoption records.

Most were sealed.

One page was accessible because of a filing error.

Mara had not entered the system alone.

She had a twin sister.

Daniel stared at the document.

Twin female infants.

Birth names Mara Lane and Evelyn Lane.

Evelyn.

Daniel whispered the name.

Claire sat beside him.

"Did Mara know?"

"I don't know."

Alvarez continued reading.

Evelyn had been placed with another family.

The adoption was finalized in another state.

Records ended there.

Daniel remembered Lila's words.

Same face.

Older.

Cold eyes.

A twin could explain it.

But not why the woman stood outside Lila's window.

By afternoon, Alvarez found an old surname.

Evelyn Lane had become Evelyn Cross.

Public records showed she attended college in Massachusetts.

Then vanished from normal databases twelve years earlier.

No marriage record.

No tax history.

Nothing.

But Daniel recognized the surname Cross.

"Hollow Creek Holdings."

Alvarez looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel grabbed Jonathan's notes.

One of the transfers had gone to Cross Meridian Consulting.

The account was closed eight years ago.

Claire read over his shoulder.

"You're saying Mara's twin might be connected to Hollow Creek?"

Daniel stood.

"And Victor."

Alvarez remained cautious.

"We don't know that."

"Lila saw them together."

"Lila was traumatized."

"Stop telling me what my daughter might not remember and start looking at what she does."

Alvarez's expression hardened.

"I'm trying to keep your fear from turning every clue into a conclusion."

Daniel regretted his tone.

But not his urgency.

"Find Evelyn."

"We are."

They found her before sunset.

Or at least they found evidence she had been alive recently.

An airport facial recognition system flagged a woman matching Mara's features arriving in Westbridge two days before the wedding.

She traveled under the name Eve Carson.

Her passport was genuine.

Her address was in Virginia.

The house was empty when police arrived.

Neighbors said nobody had lived there for months.

Daniel studied the airport image.

For one unbearable second, he believed he was looking at Mara.

Same cheekbones.

Same dark hair.

Same slight tilt of the head.

Then he noticed the eyes.

Lila was right.

Cold.

The woman wore a long gray coat.

And on her right hand was an emerald ring.

Claire's ring.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

Claire had already seen it.

"That's impossible."

Daniel stared at Claire's bare hand.

"Where is your ring now?"

"In the bedroom."

Marcus checked.

The ring was gone.

Claire's face drained.

"I put it in the jewelry box."

Daniel whispered, "Who had access?"

"Nobody."

Marcus corrected her.

"Victor visited the house yesterday morning."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"He came to bring the wedding documents."

Daniel turned to Alvarez.

"So Victor takes Claire's ring. Evelyn arrives in town wearing an identical ring. Then Victor runs from the chapel."

"Possible."

Claire whispered.

"Why would he give me the ring in the first place?"

Nobody answered.

That night, Daniel received a text from Victor's number.

Only five words.

YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG GIRL.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed Mara.

Alive.

Standing in front of a clock.

Daniel immediately recognized the clock.

It stood in the main hall of his childhood home.

The Mercer house where he and Victor had grown up.

The property had been abandoned for nine years.

Across the bottom of the photograph was a handwritten message.

Ask Claire what happened there.
