Chapter 12 - Lila finally told her father what she saw)

The biggest breakthrough did not come from police.

It came at breakfast.

Lila sat with Daniel eating pancakes.

For the first time since Mara disappeared, she asked for extra syrup.

Daniel nearly laughed from happiness.

Small normal things had become enormous.

Then Lila said.

"Daddy."

"Yes?"

"I lied."

Daniel put down his coffee.

"About what?"

"The lady outside."

His heartbeat changed.

"Mara?"

Lila nodded.

"It was Mommy."

Daniel remained silent.

"Why did you say it wasn't?"

"She told me."

"When?"

"Outside."

Daniel stared.

"Mara spoke to you outside the window?"

Lila nodded.

"What did she say?"

"She said don't tell Daddy."

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"Anything else?"

"She said bad man watches Daddy."

"Who?"

"She didn't know."

"Did she hug you?"

Lila shook her head.

"She couldn't come close."

"Why?"

"Camera."

Daniel looked toward the window.

Mara knew the estate cameras.

She knew approaching Lila could reveal her location.

"Why did you say she had cold eyes?"

Lila's lip trembled.

"Because Mommy was scared."

Daniel reached across the table.

She took his hand.

"What happened the night she disappeared?"

Lila looked toward Eli.

He was building something with blocks across the room.

"I saw Mommy later."

Daniel stopped breathing.

"After the fire?"

Lila nodded.

"Where?"

"Road."

The official accident site.

"Was she in the car?"

"No."

"Who was?"

"Aunt lady."

Evelyn.

"What happened?"

Lila's voice became small.

"Mommy and aunt lady yelling."

"About what?"

"Me."

Daniel leaned closer.

"What did they say?"

"Aunt lady said Mommy ruined everything."

"Did you see Victor?"

Lila shook her head.

"Who else?"

"Old man."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What old man?"

She pointed at a family photograph.

Not Victor.

Not Robert.

Samuel.

The photograph had been taken decades earlier.

Lila had never met him.

Yet she touched his face.

"Him."

Daniel immediately called Alvarez.

If Lila was correct, Samuel Mercer had been at Hollow Creek the night Evelyn died.

Samuel was the missing adult Eli remembered.

The older man.

The person everyone had forgotten existed.

Federal agents began searching.

They found a rental vehicle abandoned near the Canadian border.

Inside was blood.

DNA tests matched Mara.

Daniel felt his world collapse again.

But the amount was small.

Not evidence of death.

The trunk contained a child's blue hair ribbon.

Sophie wore one in the Montreal school photograph.

Daniel flew to Canada with Alvarez.

Border records showed Mara and Sophie had crossed into the United States three months earlier under false names.

They had been moving constantly.

A hotel clerk remembered them.

Mara appeared nervous.

Sophie rarely left her side.

One evening, an older man arrived.

The clerk identified Samuel from a photograph.

The three left together.

Not violently.

Mara seemed to know him.

Daniel struggled to understand.

Was Samuel protecting them?

Controlling them?

Working with Vale?

A new voice message answered part of it.

Mara sent it directly to Daniel.

His phone rang at 3:07 a.m.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then Mara.

"Daniel."

His knees weakened.

"Mara."

He had imagined her voice hundreds of times.

Hearing it destroyed every defense he had.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Are you safe?"

"For now."

"Sophie?"

A pause.

"She's with me."

Daniel began crying.

"Is she my daughter?"

Mara's voice broke.

"Yes."

Daniel covered his face.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was coming home the night everything happened."

"Then come home now."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because Lila remembered."

"What does that change?"

"Everything."

Daniel's anger surfaced.

"You watched me bury your sister."

"I know."

"You watched our daughter stop speaking."

"I know."

"You watched me believe you were dead."

Mara cried quietly.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry isn't enough."

"No."

"Then give me the truth."

"I will."

"When?"

"When I know Sophie can survive it."

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"Survive what?"

Silence.

Then Mara whispered.

"The reason she was taken."

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

A message arrived seconds later.

COME TO SAINT AUGUSTINE TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT.

May you like

COME ALONE.

THE PLACE WHERE LILA SPOKE IS THE ONLY PLACE I KNOW THEY WILL NOT EXPECT US TO MEET.
