Chapter 9 - The Mother on the Other Side of the Glass

Diane remained in custody for several days before being released under strict conditions.

She could not return to the farmhouse or contact Lily without permission.

Two months passed before Lily agreed to meet her.

They sat in a supervised room at the county courthouse. A glass wall separated the meeting area from the public corridor.

Diane looked smaller without Garrett beside her.

“I have rehearsed an apology,” she said.

Lily remained quiet.

Diane folded her hands.

“Every version sounded like I was asking you to forgive me.”

“Are you?”

“No.”

The answer surprised Lily.

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

“I want forgiveness. But wanting it does not mean I deserve it.”

Lily waited.

Diane told her the truth.

She had known about the first transfer from the trust. Garrett claimed the money would be returned after his development project succeeded. When it failed, he convinced Diane that exposing him would destroy the family.

He threatened to leave her with the debts.

He told her Ava would take control of the house.

He told her Lily would be placed in an institution if authorities believed she could not manage alone.

Diane believed some of it.

She pretended to believe the rest because the truth required courage she did not have.

“Why didn’t you choose me?” Lily asked.

Diane looked down.

“Because choosing you would have forced me to admit what I had allowed.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only honest one.”

Lily felt anger rise inside her, but beneath it was grief.

She had spent years searching for a hidden explanation that would transform Diane’s behavior into love.

There was no secret explanation.

There was only a series of choices.

Diane slid an envelope across the table.

Inside was a written statement agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors, release her trustee authority, and surrender her interest in property purchased with Lily’s money.

“I will testify,” Diane said. “Even if it sends Garrett to prison. Even if it sends me there too.”

Lily folded the statement.

“This does not repair what happened.”

“I know.”

“I am not ready to forgive you.”

“I know.”

“And I may never trust you again.”

Diane’s tears fell.

“I know.”

For the first time, her mother did not demand comfort.

Lily stood to leave.

At the door, she turned back.

“Cooperate because it is right. Not because you think it will bring me back.”

Diane nodded.

Lily left the room without embracing her.

May you like

It was painful.

It was also freedom.
