Chapter 1 - The Call Beneath the Table

Six hours earlier, Lily had been alone in the kitchen when the first thunder shook the farmhouse.

She was twenty-nine years old and had lived in the house for most of her life. Before her mother married Garrett, the farmhouse had felt open and warm. Her father had widened the kitchen doorway after Lily began using a wheelchair. He had lowered one section of the counter so she could cook beside him. He had built a smooth wooden ramp leading to the garden because Lily loved watching tomatoes ripen after summer rain.

After her father died, the house slowly changed.

Garrett called the lowered counter ugly and replaced it with marble that Lily could barely reach. He complained that the ramp spoiled the appearance of the porch. He moved furniture into narrow arrangements and then criticized Lily whenever her chair struck a table leg.

Each change was small enough to sound reasonable.

Together, they formed a cage.

That evening, Lily sat at the kitchen table reviewing an email from the bank. It concerned a withdrawal from a trust established by her father.

The amount was forty-eight thousand dollars.

Lily had not authorized it.

She opened another statement. Then another.

Payments had been made to a construction company Garrett claimed to own. The company address was an empty office in another state.

Lily heard footsteps behind her.

Garrett entered carrying a glass of water.

“You are still awake,” he said.

“The bank sent me a notice.”

He placed the glass beside her.

“What kind of notice?”

“A withdrawal from my trust.”

Garrett’s expression did not change.

“You asked me to handle some repairs.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You probably forgot.”

Lily turned her chair toward him.

“I did not forget forty-eight thousand dollars.”

Lightning flashed across the windows.

Garrett took the papers from the table.

“You become confused when you are tired.”

“I want the account records.”

“I manage the accounts.”

“They are mine.”

His hand tightened around the papers.

From the hallway, Diane appeared in her robe.

“What is happening?” she asked.

“Lily is having another episode,” Garrett replied.

Lily stared at her mother.

“I am asking about my own money.”

Diane sighed as though Lily had interrupted something important.

“Your stepfather has taken care of this family for years. Why do you always assume the worst?”

“Because the bank says I signed something I have never seen.”

Garrett moved closer.

“You need to go to your room.”

Lily reached for her phone.

“I am calling the bank.”

Garrett snatched it from the table.

The movement was fast, almost casual.

Then he smiled.

“Tomorrow,” he said. “When you are calmer.”

Lily looked at her mother again.

Diane avoided her eyes.

At that moment, Lily understood something she had resisted for years.

Her mother was not failing to notice what Garrett was doing.

She was helping him do it.

Lily waited until they turned away. Then she used the emergency button connected to the smaller phone hidden in a pocket beneath the table.

She called the only person Garrett had never been able to control.

When Ava answered, Lily whispered, “Please don’t send me back to him.”
