Chapter 7 - The Evidence in the Storm
The storm weakened after midnight, but the investigation inside the farmhouse had only begun.
Ruiz discovered that the external drive contained financial records, scanned signatures, and private recordings Garrett had made of family conversations.
He had documented arguments with Lily and edited them into short clips that made her appear unreasonable. He had sent several of those clips to a physician while requesting a letter claiming Lily lacked the ability to manage her finances.
The physician had refused.
Garrett had then altered an older medical document to resemble the letter he wanted.
The trust withdrawals followed.
Diane had signed the first transfer.
After that, Garrett forged Lily’s signature and submitted additional requests electronically.
The money had funded a failed property development and paid personal debts.
But the financial documents were not the evidence that finally destroyed Garrett’s story.
A small security camera had been installed in the kitchen months earlier. Garrett claimed it was intended to monitor the back entrance.
He had deleted the evening’s footage from the local computer.
The camera, however, automatically saved a second copy to an encrypted online account connected to the trust’s security subscription.
Garrett had forgotten about the backup.
Near dawn, Ruiz returned to the kitchen carrying the sealed folder.
The recovered images showed Garrett moving Lily’s chair beyond her reach. They showed him removing the connector and placing it in his pocket. They showed Diane entering the kitchen, seeing Lily on the floor, and doing nothing.
The audio captured Garrett demanding that Lily accept responsibility for the missing money.
The hidden phone recording captured the rest.
When Ava opened the folder and showed the first page to Lily, Garrett attempted to explain.
“You cannot understand the context from photographs.”
Lily lifted the phone.
“The call gives the context.”
She played the section where Garrett ordered her to lie to the bank.
His voice filled the kitchen.
“You will say you approved the transfer. You will say you forgot.”
Garrett lunged one step toward the device.
The officer calmly intercepted him.
That single movement ended any remaining performance of innocence.
The officers placed him under arrest for evidence tampering, unlawful restraint, financial exploitation, fraud, and related offenses.
Diane was detained separately.
As she passed Lily, she stopped.
“I never wanted this,” Diane whispered.
Lily looked at her for a long moment.
“You watched it happen.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Diane began to cry.
Lily did not comfort her.
For years, Lily had carried the emotional weight of everyone in the farmhouse. She had softened her questions to protect Garrett’s pride. She had hidden her pain to protect Diane from guilt.
She was finished protecting people from the consequences of their own decisions.
The officers led Diane outside.
Garrett followed in another vehicle. Before entering, he turned toward the house as if expecting someone to defend him.
No one did.
