Chapter 4 - the room behind the flag

The sealed room smelled of dust, paper, and old electrical equipment.

Marcus entered first despite his mother’s warning. Ethan followed with two officers, while Khloe remained near the doorway under the supervision of the foundation’s doctor.

The doctor had confirmed that Khloe and the baby were stable, but Marcus refused to let her out of his sight.

Isabella had been taken to a secured guest suite. The local police were on their way, but Ethan had asked that no one announce the situation until they understood how deeply the security system had been compromised.

Inside the hidden room, file cabinets covered the walls.

An old desk stood beneath a portrait of Marcus’s father, Thomas Vale.

Thomas had died in a private plane crash eight years earlier. The official investigation blamed a mechanical failure. Marcus had spent years accepting that explanation because the alternative would have required him to question everyone who had worked beside his father.

Margaret turned on a desk lamp.

“Your father called this the archive.”

Marcus opened the nearest cabinet.

It was empty.

“Where are the files?”

“They were here after his death.”

“Who removed them?”

“I don’t know.”

“You sealed the room.”

“I sealed the entrance. The room has another door.”

Ethan searched the wall and found the outline of a narrow service passage.

“Where does it lead?”

“To the old communications office.”

“That office was demolished five years ago.”

Margaret looked toward the floor.

“Then someone lied to us.”

Khloe entered despite the doctor’s protest.

“Isabella knew the camera was inactive because she knew the system layout. Who gave her that information?”

“She was once engaged to Marcus,” Margaret said. “She spent years in this house.”

“That explains familiarity. It doesn’t explain tonight.”

Ethan connected the black drive to an isolated laptop.

A single encrypted folder appeared.

Its name was AURORA.

Marcus tried his father’s birthday.

Access denied.

Margaret entered the date of Thomas’s death.

Access denied.

Khloe looked at the photograph of Thomas above the desk. He stood beside a younger Marcus, one hand resting on his son’s shoulder.

“What did your father call you when you were a child?”

Marcus hesitated.

“North Star.”

Khloe entered NORTHSTAR.

The folder opened.

Inside were financial transfers, scanned letters, audio recordings, and a video file created on the night Thomas died.

Ethan began copying everything to a secure server.

Marcus opened the financial ledger.

For twelve years, money had moved from the Vale Foundation into temporary companies. Most of those companies disappeared after receiving a single transfer.

Aurelia Holdings was different.

It remained active.

“What did Aurelia purchase?” Khloe asked.

Ethan opened the asset list.

“The abandoned hospital, three residential properties, and shares in a private medical data company.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“The company that manages your clinic’s records?”

She read the name again.

“Yes.”

Margaret gripped the back of the chair.

“They were not asking for her medical file. They already had access.”

The doctor immediately stepped outside to contact the clinic.

Ethan opened one of Thomas’s scanned letters.

The letter had been addressed to Margaret but never delivered.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, the person I trusted has already moved against me. Aurelia is not a company. It is a vault. I placed the evidence there because I could no longer trust the board, the family, or the security office.

Do not allow Marcus to sign the succession agreement until he knows the truth about the children’s trust.

Margaret read the final line twice.

“What children’s trust?”

Marcus searched the folder.

A document appeared with the title VALE LEGACY TRUST, AMENDMENT 7.

The amendment stated that upon the birth of Marcus’s first child, control of a protected block of Vale Global shares would transfer into a new trust.

The child would eventually hold enough voting power to determine control of the family company.

Khloe felt suddenly cold.

“This is why the message said the child must not inherit.”

Marcus read the signature page.

“My father signed this three days before he died.”

Margaret looked devastated.

“He never told me.”

“Who witnessed it?”

Ethan enlarged the page.

The witness line had been blacked out.

Before he could recover it, the laptop screen flashed.

Someone had entered the secure server.

Files began disappearing.

“Disconnect it,” Marcus ordered.

Ethan pulled the network cable.

The deletion stopped.

Most files remained, but the video from the night Thomas died had vanished.

Khloe noticed one recovered audio file.

It had been recorded twenty minutes before the plane departed.

Ethan played it.

Thomas’s voice filled the room.

“I know what Aurelia is being used for. I know who authorized the transfers.”

A second voice answered.

“You should have protected your son by remaining silent.”

Marcus stepped closer to the speaker.

The voice had been distorted, but not completely.

It belonged to a man.

Thomas spoke again.

“If anything happens to me, the evidence will reach Margaret.”

The man laughed.

“No. It will reach the woman Marcus marries. And when it does, she will lead us directly to the final copy.”

The recording ended.

Khloe looked toward the black drive.

“The anonymous note was not sent to help me.”

Ethan nodded.

“It was bait.”

“Someone wanted me to retrieve the drive.”

“And Isabella was supposed to take it from you,” Marcus said.

Margaret walked to the portrait of Thomas.

Behind it, she found a recessed safe.

The door was open.

Inside was a single envelope.

Marcus removed it.

The front was addressed in Thomas’s handwriting.

TO MY SON’S WIFE.

Khloe opened it carefully.

There was no letter.

Only a photograph.

It showed Thomas standing outside the abandoned Aurelia hospital with three people.

One was Isabella’s father.

One was Marcus’s uncle, Julian Vale.

The third person had been cut from the photograph.

On the back, Thomas had written:

THE ONE REMOVED FROM THIS PICTURE GAVE THE ORDER.
