THE FOOTAGE EXPOSED HER / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - the camera never blinked

The shattered glass had not stopped moving when the security director raised the tablet.

Tiny fragments continued sliding across the marble floor, catching the chandelier light like pieces of ice. Khloe sat several feet from the broken console table, one hand pressed against the floor and the other wrapped protectively around her stomach.

Marcus stood between her and Isabella, unable to understand how a celebration inside his family’s residence had turned into an accusation, a shattered table, and his pregnant wife struggling to breathe through fear.

Isabella clutched the sleeve of her white evening dress.

“She attacked me first,” she repeated. “Marcus, you know what she’s like when she’s angry.”

Khloe stared at her.

“You pushed me.”

Her voice was quiet, but it carried through the corridor.

Margaret Vale, Marcus’s mother, stood in the doorway beneath the American flag. Her face had gone pale. Behind her, guests were gathering at the far end of the corridor, whispering as security officers tried to keep them away.

Marcus took one step toward Khloe.

“Tell me what really happened.”

Before Khloe could answer, Security Director Ethan Cole entered the corridor.

“You don’t need to choose,” Ethan said. “The camera recorded everything.”

Isabella’s expression did not change immediately.

Only her eyes moved.

She looked toward the small black camera above the archway, then toward the broken console table beside her.

“That camera was inactive,” she said.

Ethan’s gaze sharpened.

“I never told you where the recording came from.”

The corridor fell silent.

Ethan turned the tablet toward Marcus and pressed play.

The recording showed the corridor seven minutes earlier.

Khloe appeared first, walking slowly toward the private residential wing while reading a message on her phone. Isabella stepped from behind the console table and blocked her path.

There was no sound in the first few seconds, but the image was clear.

Isabella pointed at Khloe’s stomach.

Khloe attempted to walk past her.

Isabella grabbed her wrist.

Then she shoved her.

Marcus stopped breathing.

On the screen, Khloe lost her balance and struck the side of the console table before lowering herself toward the floor. Isabella immediately swept a decorative sculpture from the table, scattering glass across the marble.

She then crouched near Khloe and placed something inside the pocket of Khloe’s coat.

Marcus turned toward Isabella.

“What did you put in her pocket?”

Isabella backed away.

“This is manipulated.”

Ethan continued playing the footage.

Isabella looked directly toward the camera and lifted one hand to the small device hidden beneath her hair.

A man’s voice came through the recording.

“The corridor is open. Finish it before Marcus arrives.”

Margaret gripped the doorway.

Ethan paused the video.

“The private wing was locked,” Marcus said. “Only five people have access.”

“That is correct,” Ethan replied.

“Who opened it?”

Ethan brought up the electronic access report.

The screen displayed a name.

Margaret Vale.

Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.

Margaret looked from the tablet to Ethan.

“I did not unlock that door.”

“The system says your card did,” Ethan said.

Isabella suddenly moved toward the broken console.

Khloe saw it first.

“She’s reaching for something.”

A security officer intercepted Isabella before her hand disappeared beneath the table. Ethan knelt beside the wreckage and pulled away a loose panel.

A small black drive had been taped underneath.

Isabella stopped struggling.

Marcus stared at the device.

“What is that?”

Ethan placed it inside an evidence pouch.

“I don’t know yet. But Isabella was willing to risk everything to reach it.”

Khloe looked toward Margaret.

The older woman’s fear seemed real, but there was something else beneath it.

Recognition.

“You know what that drive is,” Khloe said.

Margaret said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer to his mother.

“Mom?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with an emotion Marcus had not seen in years.

“The footage does not expose only Isabella,” she whispered. “It exposes what your father built beneath this house.”

A distant alarm sounded from the security office.

Ethan touched his earpiece.

His expression changed.

“Someone is deleting the rest of the recordings.”

“Stop them,” Marcus ordered.

“We’re trying.”

The chandelier lights flickered.

Every electronic lock in the corridor released at once.

From somewhere inside the private wing, a door slowly opened.

Ethan drew his attention toward the darkness beyond it.

“That room,” Margaret said, “has been sealed since the night Marcus’s father died.”

Khloe looked at the black drive in Ethan’s hand.

Then a printer inside the hidden room activated by itself.

A single sheet of paper slid onto the floor.

Across the top, in dark capital letters, were five words.

THE CHILD MUST NOT INHERIT.
