Chapter 2 - six hours earlier

Six hours before the footage exposed Isabella, the Vale residence had been filled with music.
The annual Vale Foundation dinner was supposed to announce a new maternal health program created in Khloe’s name. Reporters waited beyond the gates, donors filled the ballroom, and the most influential members of the Vale family had gathered beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Khloe had spent most of the afternoon avoiding the attention.
At seven months pregnant, she was tired of cameras focusing on her stomach and strangers asking questions about the future Vale heir. She wanted the night to be about the clinics the foundation planned to build, not the fortune her child might inherit.
Marcus found her standing near the library window.
“You disappeared,” he said.
“I walked twenty feet away from the ballroom.”
“That counts as disappearing when three security officers lose sight of you.”
Khloe smiled faintly.
Marcus placed a hand over hers.
“Are you feeling all right?”
“I’m fine. Your mother has asked me that twelve times.”
“She worries.”
“She investigates.”
“That too.”
Across the room, Margaret was speaking with the foundation’s trustees. She wore a silver gown and the composed expression that had made generations of employees nervous.
Margaret had never openly opposed Marcus’s marriage to Khloe. She had simply asked for background reports, financial disclosures, medical documents, and a private meeting with every person Khloe had known since university.
Khloe had survived the inspection.
She was less certain she had earned Margaret’s trust.
A server approached and handed Khloe a folded card.
“This was left for you, Mrs. Vale.”
There was no name on the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a bank transfer.
The amount was $18 million.
The sender was the Vale Foundation.
The recipient was a company called Aurelia Holdings.
Below the photograph, someone had written:
ASK ISABELLA WHY THE CHILDREN’S FUND OWNS AN EMPTY BUILDING.
Khloe read it twice.
Marcus noticed the change in her expression.
“What is it?”
She folded the photograph before he could see it.
“Nothing.”
He studied her face.
“Khloe.”
“Tonight matters to the clinics. I don’t want to create a scene over an anonymous note.”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Anonymous notes are usually designed to create scenes.”
Before Khloe could respond, applause rose from the ballroom.
Isabella Grant had stepped onto the stage.
She wore white, though Margaret had once told her that wearing white to another woman’s foundation event was either careless or strategic. Isabella was rarely careless.
“Good evening,” Isabella said. “Tonight, the Vale Foundation begins its most personal mission yet.”
A photograph of Khloe appeared on the screen behind her.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You approved that?”
“No.”
Isabella continued.
“Thanks to Marcus and Khloe Vale, twelve new clinics will provide care to mothers and children across the state.”
The audience applauded again.
Khloe watched Isabella smile.
Three years earlier, Isabella had expected to marry Marcus. Their families had encouraged the match, their engagement had been planned, and the newspapers had already begun calling them a future power couple.
Then Marcus met Khloe.
Isabella had publicly accepted the end of the arrangement. She had even offered to remain at the foundation to ensure the transition remained professional.
Khloe had never believed her kindness.
Onstage, Isabella invited Marcus and Khloe forward.
As Marcus guided Khloe toward the ballroom, Isabella’s eyes dropped briefly toward the folded photograph in Khloe’s hand.
The smile disappeared from her face.
Only for a second.
But Khloe saw it.
After the speech, Khloe entered the ladies’ sitting room and locked the door. She photographed the anonymous note, then searched the public corporate registry on her phone.
Aurelia Holdings owned one building.
The address belonged to an abandoned pediatric hospital purchased by the Vale Foundation two years earlier.
The foundation’s official reports claimed the property had been converted into a research center.
Satellite images showed boarded windows.
Khloe searched the list of company officers.
The page had been removed.
Someone knocked.
“Khloe?” Isabella called from the hallway. “Marcus is looking for you.”
Khloe placed the note inside her coat pocket.
“I’ll be there in a moment.”
“You should not keep secrets from your husband.”
Khloe opened the door.
Isabella stood alone.
“Were you listening?”
“I was concerned.”
“You’ve never been concerned about me.”
“That isn’t true.”
Khloe stepped into the hallway.
“Then tell me about Aurelia Holdings.”
Isabella’s face remained calm.
But her fingers tightened around the stem of her glass.
“I have no idea what that is.”
“Then you won’t mind if I ask the trustees.”
Isabella leaned closer.
“Tonight is not the night.”
“Why?”
“Because this family has survived scandals you cannot imagine. Marcus has spent years rebuilding its name. If you truly love him, you will stop searching for doors that were locked before you arrived.”
Khloe held Isabella’s gaze.
“And if the doors are hiding stolen money?”
Isabella smiled again.
“You always assumed marrying Marcus made you powerful.”
“No. Marrying Marcus made me family.”
“That is not the same thing.”
A group of guests entered the hallway, forcing Isabella to step aside.
As Khloe walked back toward the ballroom, her phone vibrated.
A new message appeared from an unknown number.
DO NOT RETURN TO THE BALLROOM.
GO TO THE PRIVATE CORRIDOR.
THE PROOF IS UNDER THE CONSOLE.
Khloe stopped.
At the far end of the hall, Marcus was surrounded by donors.
Margaret was beside him.
Isabella stood behind Khloe.
When Khloe looked back, Isabella was already typing on her phone.
The next message arrived immediately.
COME ALONE, OR THE RECORDS DISAPPEAR.
Khloe should have called Marcus.
She should have called Ethan.
May you like
Instead, she placed one hand over her stomach and walked toward the locked private corridor.
Behind her, Isabella quietly followed.
